Role overview
This position is responsible for leading property, engineering, casualty, and general accident underwriting operations, ensuring profitable portfolio growth, strong client service, and disciplined technical execution within a large general insurance environment.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the daily underwriting business for property, engineering, and casualty lines in a large general insurance setup.
- Supervise, guide, and mentor Underwriting Managers, Assistant Underwriting Managers, and Underwriting Officers in their day-to-day work.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with corporate clients and brokers to improve retention, strengthen customer stickiness, support profitable growth, and deliver high service standards.
- Work closely with reinsurance, claims, actuarial, finance, accounts, legal, and compliance teams to keep operations running smoothly.
- Use established relationships with reinsurance brokers and underwriters in London, DIFC, and Singapore to support competitive placements and terms.
- Underwrite quality risks within delegated authority and arrange facultative reinsurance wherever needed.
- Review policy wordings, endorsements, and contract terms, ensuring technical correctness and compliance with treaty and facultative reinsurance conditions, operating manuals, and delegated authorities.
- Handle audit queries, monitor documentation turnaround, and contribute to digitization initiatives and MIS reporting.
- Evaluate risks and issue quotations in line with underwriting guidelines and reinsurance arrangements.
- Lead negotiations on significant accounts with clients and insurance brokers.
- Deliver department goals related to top-line growth and bottom-line profitability.
- Ensure adherence to underwriting standards, internal processes, and audit requirements.
- Bring strong analytical judgment to manage complex insurance programs.
Requirements
- Proven background in overseeing day-to-day Property, Engineering, and Casualty underwriting operations in a major general insurance company.
- At least 15 years of experience in multi-line underwriting, with primary exposure to Property and Engineering.
- Additional experience in Casualty, Liability, and General Accident lines will be an advantage.
- Minimum 10 years of leadership experience, including managing a team of at least 10 people across underwriting manager, assistant manager, and officer levels.
- Track record of managing large portfolios profitably over a meaningful period.
- Current employment tenure of less than 7 years in the present organization is not preferred.
- GCC market experience is strongly preferred.
- BTech or Engineering graduates will be preferred.
- ACII, Dip CII, or FIII is the minimum insurance qualification required.
- Strong technical insurance expertise and marketing capability.
- Solid knowledge of insurance products and services.
- Experience handling corporate accounts.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Ability to stay composed under pressure and work tactfully with stakeholders.
- Strong negotiation skills and proven leadership capability.
- Ability to understand and manage complex insurance programs.
