Role overview
The Geoscience Consultant will act as a senior technical specialist and trusted advisor within the Exploration & Production function. The position supports subsurface assessment, prospect creation, risk analysis, and resource estimation throughout the asset life cycle, covering frontier exploration, appraisal, development, and production. The role involves combining inputs from multiple disciplines, guiding geoscience decisions, and working closely with petrophysics, reservoir engineering, drilling, and commercial teams to help grow the value of the company’s hydrocarbon assets.
Scope of work
- Provide integrated geological and geophysical interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic data, well logs, core information, and regional studies to identify and progress exploration leads and prospects.
- Build and update geological models covering structural, stratigraphic, and sedimentological elements for key basins and play concepts.
- Create and prioritize exploration prospect portfolios, including volumetric calculations such as GRV, STOIIP, and GIIP, along with probabilistic geological risk assessments.
- Carry out basin studies, source rock analysis, and petroleum system modeling using tools such as PetroMod or BasinMod.
- Use advanced seismic interpretation workflows in platforms such as Petrel, Kingdom, and OpendTect, including attribute studies, AVO/DHI work, and inversion analysis.
- Partner with geophysicists to plan seismic acquisition and assess whether processing results are suitable for the intended technical use.
- Combine seismic interpretation with well control to improve calibration of structural and stratigraphic models.
- Contribute geoscience input to well prognosis documents, including expected formation tops, lithology predictions, pore pressure estimates, and key geological targets.
- Support drilling operations in real time by updating subsurface interpretations using formation evaluation, mud logging, and MWD/LWD information.
- Complete post-well reviews and document lessons learned to refine the geological model.
- Prepare and review PRMS-aligned resource estimates for prospective resources, contingent resources, and reserves.
- Use Monte Carlo simulation and decision-tree approaches to assess uncertainty and support portfolio risk analysis.
- Present subsurface interpretations in CPR documents and other regulatory submissions.
- Coach and guide junior and mid-level geoscientists and support their development against competency frameworks.
- Lead technical reviews, assurance gates, and stage-gate evaluations for exploration and appraisal work.
- Communicate technical findings clearly to senior leadership, joint venture partners, investment committees, and regulators.
- Work in integrated project teams with reservoir engineers, petrophysicists, drilling engineers, facilities planners, and commercial analysts.
- Coordinate with national oil companies, government regulators, and joint venture partners on geoscience matters.
- Support business development efforts such as farm-in/farm-out assessments, license round submissions, and M&A due diligence.
Qualifications and experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Geoscience, Geology, Geophysics, or Earth Sciences is required.
- A master’s degree or PhD in a relevant geoscience discipline is strongly preferred.
- At least 8 years of progressive subsurface geoscience experience in the oil and gas sector.
- Hands-on experience across exploration, appraisal, and/or development work in at least two geological settings or basins.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary, integrated team environments.
- Background in organizations such as national oil companies, international oil companies, or independent E&P operators is preferred.
Technical and preferred capabilities
- Advanced use of seismic interpretation software such as Petrel, Kingdom, OpendTect, or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of basin modeling software such as PetroMod or BasinMod.
- Understanding of formation evaluation, well log interpretation, and petrophysical principles.
- Strong familiarity with PRMS resource classification and related reporting expectations.
- Exposure to AVO analysis, seismic inversion, and geomechanical concepts.
- Ability to use GIS tools such as ArcGIS and QGIS for regional mapping and data integration.
- Professional certification or membership such as AAPG CPG, SEG, or an equivalent body is preferred.
- Experience with unconventional resources including tight oil, shale gas, or coal bed methane is an advantage.
- Knowledge of deepwater, HPHT, or frontier exploration settings is valuable.
- Familiarity with CCS site screening, characterization, and assessment is preferred.
- Prior involvement in CPR preparation and engagement with independent auditors is desirable.
- Ability to use Python or R for subsurface data analysis is preferred.
- Awareness of EAGE, SPE, and AAPG publications and technical standards is useful.
