About the Group

University Hospitals of Liverpool Group is among the NHS’s largest provider groups, uniting three statutory organisations that serve Liverpool and the wider surrounding area. The Group employs more than 19,000 colleagues and generates annual income of about £1.8 billion. Its work spans care delivered in the community through to highly specialised clinical services that are recognised nationally.

The organisation also has a strong role in research, teaching and innovation, built on long-standing partnerships with universities and other organisations across the city region. Formed on 1 November 2024, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) was created with a shared ambition to improve care for local communities. It is one of the region’s major employers, with over 18,900 colleagues committed to serving people from birth and throughout life.

The Group supports 630,000 people across Merseyside as their local NHS provider, while also delivering specialist regional services for more than two million people across the North West.

The organisation operates across five hospital sites: Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. These sites provide services ranging from major trauma care and stroke services to elective surgery, rehabilitation, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, respiratory medicine, women’s and baby’s health, and complex planned care.

About the Role

The Group is seeking an exceptional Chief Executive to guide its next phase of development. This is a senior leadership appointment that requires the ability to unite people around a clear direction, make the advantages of operating as a group real in day-to-day practice, and keep patient care quality at the centre of every decision.

You will lead across the Group and work closely with the Chair, Boards, executive teams, staff and partners to deliver the organisation’s next stage of growth and improvement.

In an increasingly challenging operating environment, you will be responsible for ensuring that service quality, operational delivery and financial discipline remain central to decision-making.

You will also represent the Group across the wider health and care system, developing strong relationships with NHS partners, local authorities, universities and other stakeholders in the region.

Another important part of the role is advancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion across the Group by promoting inclusive leadership and addressing inequities in outcomes and experience.

Working with university partners and clinical leaders, you will help strengthen Liverpool’s established reputation for research, education and innovation so that these strengths continue to improve care, outcomes and opportunities for patients and staff.

Leadership Accountabilities

  • Provide strategic leadership across the Group and align key stakeholders behind a shared direction.
  • Work in close partnership with the Chair, Boards, executive teams, colleagues and external partners to drive delivery.
  • Ensure the benefits of operating as a Group are fully realised in practice.
  • Keep quality of care, operational performance and financial stewardship at the core of leadership decisions.
  • Represent the Group confidently within the wider health and care landscape.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with NHS organisations, local authorities, universities and other regional stakeholders.
  • Champion Equality, Diversity and Inclusion through inclusive leadership and action on inequity.
  • Support the continued growth of research, education and innovation in partnership with academic and clinical leaders.
