Role Overview
This position sits within a compact infrastructure function and is suited to a senior hands-on professional who can balance technical ownership with vendor coordination. The role supports stable day-to-day infrastructure operations in a hybrid environment while helping the organisation progress toward a cloud-first operating model. It involves individual contribution, shared coverage within the team, and clear accountability across assigned areas to maintain continuity, sound judgement, and manageable workloads.
Infrastructure Operations and Service Management
- Keep hybrid infrastructure running smoothly across on-premises and cloud platforms, including network, compute, storage, backup, and end-user systems.
- Carry out configuration updates, initial issue triage, deployment support, patch oversight, backup and restore checks, environment health monitoring, and validation of vendor work when needed.
- Build and maintain KPIs, dashboards, and management reports, and improve service quality through standardised ways of working, automation, and process refinement.
- Serve as the technical point of escalation for incidents, problems, and changes, with an emphasis on lowering repeated failures and operational exposure.
Cloud Migration and Cloud Operations
- Act as the infrastructure team’s cloud specialist and set up cloud operational foundations such as landing zones, network and identity integration, monitoring, backup and disaster recovery, and cost controls.
- Support migration work, including discovery, cutover, and hypercare, and help ensure the environment remains stable after the move to cloud platforms.
- Administer AWS and Azure services, including IAM or Entra ID integration, VPC or VNet, compute, storage, load balancing, security groups or NSGs, and logging or metrics, while working closely with vendors and managed service providers.
- Spot opportunities to improve performance, resilience, and spend efficiency through right-sizing, scheduling, storage tiering, and similar actions.
End-User Computing, Endpoint, and License Management
- Oversee end-user computing services delivered mainly through endpoint vendors, covering provisioning, device refresh cycles, patching, encryption, and compliance checks.
- Keep asset records and software licence inventories accurate and aligned with organisational controls and budget discipline.
- Work with endpoint vendors to track service quality and implement improvements that strengthen user experience and operational consistency.
Governance, Risk, and Compliance
- Ensure infrastructure operations follow internal ICT policies, cybersecurity instructions, and audit requirements such as access reviews, change approvals, baseline configuration controls, and asset or licence tracking.
- Maintain clear documentation for architecture, configurations, standard operating procedures, and standards, and support audits as well as remediation tracking for infrastructure issues.
- Partner with cybersecurity leadership on matters such as hardening standards, vulnerability fixes, and identity governance, while retaining responsibility for operational execution within infrastructure.
Architecture Support and Strategic Planning
- Contribute to infrastructure design reviews and vendor proposals so that solutions remain scalable, secure, and maintainable.
- Support medium-term plans for modernisation, refresh activity, and resilience improvements that align with business needs and the cloud-first direction.
- Help convert enterprise needs into workable infrastructure designs and operating procedures together with vendors.
Procurement, Budgeting, and Vendor Management
- Provide technical input for procurement activities, including specifications, evaluation criteria, clarifications, contract administration, and payment processing in line with policy.
- Track vendor and managed service provider performance against service commitments, review deliverables technically, and raise exceptions where standards are not met.
- Maintain discipline around contracts, renewals, and asset or licence inventories.
Team Coordination and Collaboration
- Work as an individual contributor within the infrastructure function and jointly manage operations, escalations, and planning with the Assistant Director Lead for Network & Infrastructure.
- Build effective working relationships with application teams, cybersecurity leadership, and business stakeholders to keep delivery aligned.
- Document knowledge, transfer know-how, and provide cross-coverage so the function can continue smoothly.
Candidate Profile
- You should hold a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field; AWS, Azure, or ITIL certifications are an advantage.
- You need 6 to 10 years of relevant experience in infrastructure operations, including practical work in hybrid and/or cloud environments.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure is required, especially across identity and access, networking, compute and storage, monitoring, backup or disaster recovery, and cost control.
- Experience contributing to or leading cloud migration efforts in vendor-managed setups is important.
- You should understand core infrastructure areas such as enterprise networking, Windows and Linux servers, virtualisation, storage and backup, endpoint management, and M365 or Entra ID integration.
- Familiarity with IT governance frameworks, incident/change/problem processes, and audit expectations in regulated settings is needed.
- The role calls for someone who can bring fresh ideas, solutions, and tools to improve operations and support a growing IT portfolio.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and make sound decisions in a small team.
Preferred Exposure
- Experience with infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Bicep, and with CI/CD practices for infrastructure is desirable.
- Exposure to container platforms such as EKS or AKS, including image and patch pipelines, would be beneficial.
- Knowledge of FinOps methods and cloud cost governance tooling is a plus.
- Experience with cloud platforms and services beyond AWS is also welcome.
