Software Engineer Intern - 12 month Industry Placement

Role overview

Roku builds the leading TV streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, with the goal of bringing its streaming experience to televisions everywhere. The company connects viewers with the content they enjoy, helps publishers grow and monetise audiences, and gives advertisers tools to reach consumers effectively.

This is a paid 12-month industry placement beginning in September 2026. It is aimed at a student entering a placement year who wants to build experience in embedded software development and software quality.

From day one, you will be expected to contribute meaningfully. You will join a distributed team spanning multiple regions and time zones, working on high-quality releases for Roku player devices. Interns work alongside engineers, QA professionals, product managers, and other partners, with onboarding, mentoring, and regular feedback provided.

What you will do

• Build and support automated tests for C/C++ applications.
• Create Python and/or Bash scripts and tools that help with test automation and result analysis.
• Use logs, KPIs, and failure analysis techniques to reproduce issues, narrow down root causes, and understand defects.
• Review existing test cases and automation code and improve them with guidance from mentors.
• Record test steps, outcomes, and lessons learned in a clear and concise way.
• Work effectively with colleagues in different locations and time zones, keeping the team updated on progress.

What the team looks for

• Current enrolment in a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field.
• Availability for the full 12-month placement starting in September 2026.
• Some hands-on programming exposure in C and/or C++, gained through classes, personal projects, labs, or internships.
• Comfort with Linux basics and common command-line tools.
• Basic scripting ability in Python and/or Bash/Shell.
• Interest in debugging and systematic problem-solving, including log reading and step-by-step investigation.
• Ability to collaborate well and communicate clearly in a distributed working setup.
• A proactive attitude and eagerness to learn quickly in a fast-moving environment.

Nice to have

• Exposure to embedded Linux development, such as work on Raspberry Pi, development boards, or relevant coursework.
• Understanding of multithreading concepts and/or memory management fundamentals.
• Experience creating tests such as unit, integration, or white-box tests.
• Any experience with software running on SoCs or other resource-constrained devices.

Work style

Roku follows a hybrid model. Teams are in the office Monday through Thursday, while Fridays are flexible for remote work unless the role requires five days in the office or the office location follows a five-day in-office policy.
