Overview
Western Autistic School is seeking a full-time Speech Pathologist for its Laverton campus. The role is aimed at new graduates or therapists in the early stages of their careers at Range 3 level, with a salary between $73,467 and $89,335 plus superannuation.
The school offers a supportive setting for professional growth, with guidance from senior colleagues and a team-based environment. Work is carried out onsite in a school setting, with no telehealth requirement, no mobile “boot of the car” model, and no pressure to meet billing targets.
The position is located in Laverton, close to the freeway for convenient access.

About the role
The Speech Pathology service operates as a consultancy resource for teachers. Each Speech Pathologist is assigned a classroom caseload and visits those classrooms weekly. The therapist also works directly with students on a rotating basis, either one-to-one or in small groups, to track progress toward Individual Learning Plan communication goals and to demonstrate practical strategies for staff.
Therapists then advise teaching teams on ways to support each student’s communication and language growth in the classroom. The team’s approach emphasises helping students develop functional and independent communication, with a strong focus on pragmatic language and social interaction skills.
Selection criteria
- Hands-on experience delivering speech and language support to children with autism spectrum disorder or developmental delay, with particular strength in pragmatic language development.
- Working knowledge of a variety of alternative and augmentative communication systems, including both low-tech and high-tech options.
- Proven ability to partner with teachers to design programs that strengthen a student’s functional communication and social participation across different settings.
- Capability to contribute effectively as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
- Well-developed interpersonal, spoken, and written communication skills, including sensitivity to the needs and concerns of families in special education.
