Role Overview
The Payroll Clerk will support the accounting department by handling payroll accurately and keeping employee payroll records up to date. The position requires careful attention to compliance with federal, state, and local rules, along with the ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
Core Responsibilities
- Run payroll on a weekly and/or bi-weekly schedule for both hourly and salaried staff.
- Prepare and file weekly certified payroll for project-based work when required.
- Work out earnings, overtime, deductions, garnishments, bonuses, and other payroll changes.
- Follow applicable payroll laws and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Handle weekly, monthly, and quarterly union fringe benefit and tax submissions.
- Answer employee questions about payroll and correct any pay-related issues promptly.
- Support payroll tax filing, W-2 creation, and end-of-year payroll tasks.
- Review payroll reports and help with month-end accounting activities.
- Protect the confidentiality of employee and company records.
- Assist with audits and prepare payroll records and documents when needed.
Qualifications
- An associate degree in accounting, business, or a similar discipline is preferred.
- At least 2 years of payroll processing experience is preferred.
- Working knowledge of payroll procedures, wage and hour laws, and payroll tax requirements.
- Comfort using payroll systems and Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- High level of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
- Good planning, organization, and time management abilities.
- Ability to handle confidential data with discretion.
- Clear communication skills and a customer-focused approach.
