Role overview
US Cannalytics, LLC is hiring a Microbiologist for a demanding role in an independent, state-licensed testing laboratory that supports the Michigan cannabis market. This is a hands-on laboratory position for someone dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a high-throughput, production-focused setting.
The job centers on carrying out state-required microbiological testing while staying aligned with SOPs, ISO standards, and applicable state rules. The ideal candidate will already have experience managing busy, multi-test microbiology workflows, preparing samples and controls for molecular and culture-based methods, assisting with environmental monitoring, keeping records and inventory organized, and helping the team meet turnaround targets without compromising quality.
In addition to testing, the role includes day-to-day lab upkeep, compliant recordkeeping, and technical support for other lab team members. Prior experience in an environmental, public health, food science, or similarly regulated laboratory is preferred. This is a full-time, in-lab position in Warren, Michigan.
Minimum qualifications
- You must be at least 21 years old.
- A bachelor’s degree in a natural science field such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related area is required.
- A clean criminal background check is mandatory.
- You need at least 1 year of professional experience using culture-based microbiology methods.
- You need at least 1 year of professional experience with molecular genetics techniques such as qPCR or PCR.
- You should have a solid practical understanding of aseptic technique.
- You must be able to communicate clearly with both scientific and non-scientific colleagues.
- You should be highly detail-focused and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key duties
- Track cannabis samples and oversee their destruction when required.
- Measure product weights accurately and record them correctly.
- Prepare samples for microbiology testing using aseptic methods.
- Carry out microbiological testing in line with SOPs and state testing rules.
- Review test data and share findings with the Laboratory Director or the designated person.
- Check, document, and approve microbiological results and quality control data in the LIMS.
- Clean, maintain, and calibrate lab areas and instruments, while keeping all related logs current and compliant.
- Follow all SOPs, regulatory requirements, and safety procedures when working with infectious materials or biohazardous waste.
- Support the development of methods for detecting and measuring microorganisms in cannabis products.
- Help with instrument qualification and validation activities.
- Participate in proficiency testing, including the related documentation and submission process.
- Grow and maintain microbial cultures for study purposes.
- Suggest improvements that can strengthen assay workflow and reduce turnaround time.
- Keep technical knowledge current and respond to microbiology-related questions from other lab staff.
- Handle other assigned responsibilities, which may include cannabis sampling.
- Follow company procedures and all applicable rules, regulations, and laws for transporting items used in medical marijuana testing.
- Work efficiently, aim to improve quality, and maintain accuracy in all tasks.
- Use sound judgment and appropriate discretion while performing job duties.
Work environment
This position is based in a laboratory setting and may require personal protective equipment to reduce exposure to chemicals and other lab hazards. The environment includes frequent interruptions, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical equipment, vibration, and a noise level that may be loud. Cameras are installed throughout the laboratory as required by state industry rules, except in restrooms and the break room.
Physical requirements
The role requires sustained concentration and consistently accurate work. While performing the job, you will frequently stand, walk, sit, and use your hands. You must also be able to occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
Schedule
- This is a full-time position.
- Workdays are either Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday.
