Position overview
Texas A&M University at Qatar’s Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEN) program is seeking applications for a full-time academic professional track role in computer engineering. The appointment is non-tenure track and may be offered at the level of Instructional Assistant Professor or Instructional Associate Professor, based on the candidate’s background and qualifications.
The role is a 9-month academic appointment with an expected start in Summer or Fall 2024. During the Fall and Spring semesters, the teaching load is 3-3. In addition, the selected faculty member is expected to teach two summer courses, which carries an extra 3 months of salary.
The main focus of the position is undergraduate teaching in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Candidates from all areas within ECEN are welcome, although applicants with experience in computer engineering and programming are especially encouraged to apply. This appointment is centered on teaching and service; it does not include research responsibilities. Experience that enables the development of new undergraduate offerings, such as app development for iOS and Android, machine learning application programming, or computer networks, is considered an advantage.
Institution and location
The ECEN program is committed to maintaining a faculty community that is both culturally and academically diverse. The selected candidate must be prepared to relocate to Doha, Qatar.
Texas A&M University at Qatar is operated in partnership with Qatar Foundation and has been offering degree programs since 2003. Its academic offerings include Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical, Electrical and Computer, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering, along with a Master’s program in Chemical Engineering. The university’s degree programs closely match those of the main campus in College Station, Texas, and graduates receive Texas A&M University diplomas.
Doha hosts Education City, a higher-education hub focused on research and learning. Alongside Texas A&M at Qatar, the campus includes institutions such as Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University, and Georgetown University. Texas A&M University at Qatar and its Education City partners have played an important role in expanding post-secondary education and cultural development in Qatar.
The ECEN program currently includes 10 faculty members and 7 staff members. It benefits from advanced facilities and instrumentation that support teaching and research. The faculty team has built strong educational and research foundations across core engineering disciplines, with significant research support available in Qatar through the Qatar National Research Fund and industry funding.
Compensation and benefits
Texas A&M University at Qatar offers a competitive salary package aligned with rank and experience. Benefits include housing, annual home leave allowance, dependent education support, local transportation allowance, medical insurance for the employee and dependents, and suitable relocation and repatriation coverage. Faculty members may also qualify for professional development funding to support teaching and curriculum development.
Role expectations
The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence and a clear dedication to service activities. The university is seeking an instructor with strong programming capability and the ability to teach core computer engineering subjects effectively.
Teaching areas and technical background
Applicants should have strong programming skills in languages and tools such as Python, C, C++, Java, VHDL, or Verilog. The role requires the ability to teach subjects including Python, C, computer programming and architecture, digital systems design, computer architecture and design, and microprocessor systems design. Experience with PLAs, ARM Cortex-M, embedded microprocessor platforms, and computer architectures is required.
Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the U.S. higher education system, have strong computer engineering and programming expertise, and bring outstanding teaching experience from well-regarded universities.
Application details
Applicants must submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement describing their teaching and service philosophy and plans, and contact information for four references who will provide letters upon request. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by January 1, 2024. The position will remain open until filled.
