Role overview
This position supports the school district’s facilities team by keeping buildings clean, safe, functional, and presentable for students, staff, and visitors. The role sits within School Leadership and Operations and reports to the Principal or another designated supervisor. It is classified as Salaried and Non-Exempt, with work covered under the Custodial Salary Schedule, PSE retirement, and a 218-day work year.
Key responsibilities
- Take direction from the Head Custodian, supervisor, or administrator and carry out assigned work accordingly.
- Complete custodial and preventive maintenance tasks across district facilities.
- Clean woodwork, walls, furniture, and windows using approved tools and products.
- Handle floor and carpet care duties such as mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, shampooing, vacuuming, and spot cleaning using manual and powered equipment.
- Work in stairwells, on ladders, and on steps when needed to complete cleaning tasks.
- Carry out physically demanding work such as standing, bending, and walking on both level and uneven surfaces for long periods.
- Organize equipment and supplies, keep inventory updated, and replenish or request stock as needed.
- Understand and follow both spoken and written instructions.
- Use approved cleaning chemicals and fluids with standard protective equipment to maintain facilities.
- Set up furniture and equipment for meetings, activities, and events, and move items for routine and deep cleaning.
- Operate small equipment, hand tools, and machinery safely and carefully while performing assigned tasks.
- Respond promptly to safety or operational issues to help keep the school environment functioning properly.
- Maintain keys, alarm codes, equipment, and supply security and accountability.
- Follow attendance, scheduling, and punctuality expectations in a dependable manner.
- Take part in required training and on-the-job learning to improve job performance.
- Protect confidential information and follow the chain of command.
- Maintain a professional attitude when working with students, coworkers, administrators, and the public.
- Stay informed about current developments and technical information relevant to the job.
- Follow safety procedures, federal and state laws, and Board policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications
A standard high school diploma is preferred, though completion of a GED program is also acceptable. Candidates should ideally bring basic experience or training in cleaning, floor care, restroom care, and equipment maintenance, along with a willingness to learn through off-duty study or trade school/courses.
The job requires the ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, lift or carry objects weighing up to 35 pounds over distances greater than 20 feet, and work in difficult or unpleasant conditions. Applicants must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, complete tasks on time, and work cooperatively with others.
