Role Overview

The BESS engineering team member will own the technical design, engineering, and integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems across the company’s renewable energy portfolio. The position focuses on technical due diligence, system architecture, vendor assessment, detailed engineering, and support for execution from concept stage through commissioning, with the goal of delivering BESS projects that are safe, dependable, and cost-efficient.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Handle engineering work for utility-scale BESS developments, including standalone systems as well as hybrid solar/wind configurations, along with sizing and modeling of RTC projects using BESS.
  • Establish the overall system architecture, capacity sizing, and configuration in line with project needs and grid-code requirements.
  • Create and review single-line diagrams, system layouts, control philosophies, and protection schemes.
  • Assess and lock key equipment selections such as cells, racks, PCS, BMS, EMS, transformers, switchgear, HVAC, and fire protection systems.

Design and Engineering Management

  • Develop detailed design documents, technical specifications, drawings, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Carry out energy modeling, performance studies, degradation evaluation, and lifecycle analysis.
  • Ensure that all engineering outputs align with applicable safety, reliability, and performance requirements under IEC, IEEE, CEA, and IS standards.
  • Work closely with civil, electrical, SCADA, and project execution teams to ensure proper site integration. Handle relay settings and configuration of numerical relays.

Vendor and Stakeholder Coordination

  • Support technology benchmarking, vendor shortlisting, and technical evaluation of bids.
  • Engage with OEMs, EPC contractors, and consultants to refine designs and resolve technical queries.
  • Contribute engineering inputs during contract discussions, FATs, and site visits/inspections.
  • Coordinate with utilities, regulators, and grid operators to secure compliance and approvals.

Project Execution Support

  • Provide engineering support during implementation, commissioning, and performance testing.
  • Resolve design-related issues that arise during installation and operational stages.
  • Document lessons learned and help improve engineering standards, templates, and checklists.
  • Contribute to the development of future BESS configurations, including DC-coupled schemes over time.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, power systems, energy systems, or a closely related discipline.
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in renewable energy, including at least 5 years in utility-scale BESS design and engineering.
  • Strong understanding of battery technologies such as Li-ion, LFP, and NMC, as well as PCS/EMS systems and grid interconnection needs.
  • Experience with hybrid projects such as solar plus BESS or wind plus BESS is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of design and analysis tools including AutoCAD, ETAP, PSCAD, PVSyst, and MS Office.
  • Awareness of safety and electrical standards such as NFPA, NEC, IEC, IEEE, and relevant grid codes.
