Assistant Professor - Gerontology

Position Overview

The Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Boston is hiring a full-time Assistant Professor in the Department of Gerontology, with a start date of September 1, 2026. The research area is open, but the department especially welcomes applicants whose work connects aging and health disparities with cognitive aging and dementia, economics and retirement, spatial methods and the social determinants of health, or AI and digital technology applications. Strong candidates with other research agendas are also encouraged to apply.

Research Expectations

The appointee should either already have, or show clear promise of obtaining, significant external research funding and should have a record or strong potential for publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will become a Fellow in the Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston and may also be affiliated with the Center for Social and Demographic Research in Aging and the LeadingAge LTSS Center, both of which are housed in the Gerontology Institute.

Teaching and Mentoring Duties

The faculty member should be ready to teach at the undergraduate, master's, or doctoral levels within the Department of Gerontology, as well as in related academic programs. The role also includes student mentorship through academic advising, participation on doctoral dissertation committees, comprehensive examination committees, research practicum committees, and active involvement of students in the candidate's own research.

Required Qualifications

Applicants need a doctoral degree in gerontology, psychology, economics, social work, sociology, public policy, public health, human development and family studies, or another interdisciplinary field. Candidates with terminal degrees in other disciplines will also be considered.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this role is approximately $80,000 to $91,000. Final compensation will be set by the university based on relevant factors at the time an offer is made. In exceptional cases, salaries above the published range may be considered to remain competitive in the academic market.
