In this position, you will oversee the Night Porter team and step in to manage night-time duties when the Nights Manager is unavailable. The role includes preparing meeting and function spaces, maintaining high housekeeping standards, and taking a practical, hands-on approach to overnight tasks.
This opportunity is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, can organise and delegate work effectively, and is confident guiding a team while keeping guest requests moving quickly. It is a varied, fast-paced role for an energetic person who stays calm under pressure, works well with others, and brings a friendly, welcoming attitude to guest service.
Key duties
- Lead by example by ensuring both you and the night porter team are correctly dressed and presentable.
- Follow hotel policies, procedures, and standards at all times.
- Support the training of new night porters and help update SOPs when needed.
- Record any overnight issues and make sure relevant information is passed to the day team.
- Handle departmental and procedural accounting tasks accurately.
- Enter wedding, function, and room-charge dockets correctly, including guest name, room number, and filing in the right folder.
- Run the night audit process from start to finish, including turning over the system and filing all audit reports and printouts.
- Work with front office, the night team, and other departments to resolve issues that need cross-team review.
- Keep the front desk and overnight service running smoothly, including customer care, call handling, and late arrivals.
- Build positive working relationships while maintaining a consistently high service standard.
- Ensure RSA requirements are followed, including closing times, and support the bar when necessary.
- Roster the night porter appropriately and make sure working time directive rules, especially rest breaks, are respected.
- Report maintenance issues to reception for logging.
- Complete required fire walks and safety walks, using the walkie-talkie system and logging any concerns for the day team.
- Make sure all overnight staff complete their work on time, meet the required standard, and are signed out at the end of the shift.
- Stay alert to possible security concerns or intruders and report them immediately.
- Carry out practical tasks such as cleaning, vacuuming, and moving tables and chairs, including setting up meeting and function rooms.
- Answer the switchboard professionally and greet incoming callers and in-house guests by name where possible.
- Note issues from the previous night or day, along with recurring concerns, guest complaints, and staff queries.
- Maintain a professional and well-kept front desk area.
- Log late arrivals and new reservations as required.
- Support reception with guest-related requests and complete other reasonable duties assigned by management.
Experience and skills
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and help across all areas of the hotel when needed.
- Prior experience with hotel front office systems is an advantage.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team.
- Well-presented with strong attention to detail.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
