Assistant Construction Manager - Civil

Role overview

This position is focused on leading all civil construction activity for an electrical substation project, which may be at 33kV, 132kV, 220kV, or a higher voltage level. The purpose of the role is to make sure civil works such as foundations, structures, roads, drainage, and related infrastructure are delivered safely, in line with design expectations, and within the agreed schedule and budget.

Planning and coordination

• Examine civil drawings, technical specifications, and the full construction scope for the substation.
• Create and track schedules for civil work execution.
• Work closely with electrical and mechanical teams so all site activities stay aligned.
• Organize the sequence of activities for earthworks, foundations, equipment structures, and buildings.

Site preparation and earthworks

• Oversee clearing, excavation, grading, and leveling of the site.
• Manage cut-and-fill operations to achieve the required platform elevations.
• Ensure soil compaction is completed correctly and ground improvement measures are applied where needed.
• Use geotechnical findings and soil investigation reports to guide site work.

Foundations for electrical equipment

• Supervise construction of foundations for key substation equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, gantry structures, bus supports, CT/VT units, and isolators.
• Confirm that foundation capacity, anchor bolt placement, and construction tolerances match the design requirements.

Buildings, trenches, and external works

• Lead construction of control buildings, relay rooms, GIS buildings where applicable, security buildings, guard houses, cable cellars, and cable trenches.
• Make sure structural and architectural requirements are fully met.
• Oversee the building of cable ducts, vaults, and trench systems, while coordinating cable routing and spacing with the electrical team.
• Manage internal access roads, pavements, heavy-transport routes, boundary walls, fencing, gates, and site entry points.

Drainage and containment systems

• Ensure the substation drainage network is installed properly.
• Supervise oil containment pits for transformers, stormwater drains, and water collection systems.
• Confirm that slopes and drainage paths direct water away from equipment areas.

Grounding support and materials management

• Coordinate civil work needed for installation of the substation grounding grid, including trenching and backfilling for earthing conductors.
• Arrange procurement and delivery of materials such as concrete, reinforcement steel, structural steel, and precast components.
• Manage manpower, equipment, and subcontractor deployment on site.

Testing, inspection, and reporting

• Check and verify concrete slump tests, cube strength tests, soil compaction tests, and reinforcement inspections before concreting.
• Monitor daily site progress and prepare weekly and monthly status reports.
• Spot delays early and take corrective action to keep the project on track.
• Coordinate regularly with project managers, consultants, and clients.
