Role overview
This position is responsible for guiding students with disabilities and coordinating a broad range of support services so their needs are met within federal requirements, current learning theory, recognized best practices, and the college’s available resources. The role reports to the Director of Student Success at Lakes Region Community College and is based on campus in a full-time, year-round schedule of 37.5 hours per week.
Key responsibilities
- Create, apply, and review policies and day-to-day practices that keep the institution aligned with its mission and with applicable disability-related laws, including the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), the ADA Amendments Act (2008), and related federal, state, and local requirements.
- Respond to and support questions from prospective students, current students, parents, faculty, and staff.
- Examine and make sense of diagnostic materials such as medical records, psychological and neurological reports, Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and Section 504 plans.
- Meet with students to understand barriers, build accommodation plans, and monitor their progress so they can learn and participate successfully on campus.
- Deliver training, guidance, and ongoing consultation to administrators, faculty, and staff to strengthen awareness and responsiveness toward students with disabilities.
- Keep accurate documentation and maintain secure, confidential records for the students served by the office.
- Act as a supportive resource for students with disabilities and manage ongoing communication such as pre-entry and follow-up letters, emails, and phone calls.
- Work with faculty to identify suitable support methods and materials and help them implement those accommodations effectively.
- Coordinate with outside agencies to help secure services and/or funding for students with disabilities.
- Participate in college committees and system-wide committees when needed.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant college, system, state, and federal policies and regulations.
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field.
- At least three years of experience in academic counseling, career counseling, teaching, or social work within an educational or human services environment, with a focus on supporting individuals with disabilities.
Preferred background
- Proven experience advocating for students with disabilities in post-secondary education.
- Strong familiarity with psychological, psychiatric, physical, and learning disabilities, along with the reasonable accommodations commonly associated with them.
- Experience gathering and using data for compliance purposes, outcome review, and internal/external reporting.
- Prior work involving ADA compliance in a post-secondary setting.
- Knowledge of adult education, assessment, curriculum, program development, and computer-assisted learning.
Work traits and capabilities
- Ability to evaluate reasonable accommodations across a wide range of disabilities, including deaf/hard of hearing, blind/low vision, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and cognitive or physical disabilities.
- Practical understanding of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the ADA as amended.
- Ability to interpret complex psychological, psychiatric, cognitive, and physical assessments and use them to shape individualized accommodation plans.
- Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and outside partners in a collaborative setting.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Well-developed organization and decision-making abilities.
- Diplomatic approach with a strong commitment to confidentiality.
- Ability to maintain detailed records of student progress and development.
- Comfort working independently as well as as part of a team.
- Willingness to maintain a professional appearance appropriate to the role as determined by the College.
Terms and conditions
This is a campus-based, full-time, year-round role requiring 37.5 hours per week. Employment offers are conditional upon successful completion of the required background check.
