Overview
USIC is hiring a Utility Locator in Hilton Head Island, SC for a full-time, on-site role. This position is geared toward someone who enjoys independent outdoor work, values safety and quality, and wants to build a long-term career in underground utility damage prevention.
The company is a major provider of underground utility locating and infrastructure protection services across the United States, supporting telecommunications, electric, gas, water, sewer, and municipal partners. The work focuses on helping protect critical infrastructure through accurate, efficient, and safe locating services.
Prior locating experience is not required. USIC provides training for new hires, while experienced locators are also welcome to apply. Team members work in the field using a company vehicle, along with ticket and claims management tools to complete mark-outs clearly and accurately for excavators and property owners.
Compensation is $20.00 per hour.
Key Duties
As a Locator, you will spend your workday outdoors and independently in the field. The role involves identifying underground utilities and marking them accurately so excavation work can proceed safely.
- Safely and accurately locate underground systems such as telecom, electric, cable TV, gas, water, and sewer lines.
- Inspect assigned areas thoroughly, mark utility locations, complete required records, and photograph each locate.
- Use company-issued tools, vehicle, phone, and equipment to complete field assignments efficiently.
Work Schedule
This is a daytime, full-time position. Because many locates must be turned around within 48 hours, the role may include working the day after holidays and some weekends when required. Overtime, weekend shifts, and on-call coverage, including nights and weekends, are expected based on business needs.

Requirements
Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors in changing weather and should be ready for a physically active, safety-sensitive field role. Strong technology skills and clear communication are also important.

- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and perform tasks involving walking, bending, and lifting up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to distinguish wiring and utility-marking colors.
- Ability to read and use locate tickets, maps, and prints.
- Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with coworkers, customers, contractors, and homeowners.
