Role Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger in Columbus, GA. This full-time field role is focused on protecting crews working near tracks by managing train movement and applying federal railroad safety standards. The position supports large railroads, short lines, transit operations, state rail projects, and contractor teams.
Reporting Line and Travel
This role reports to the District Manager. A significant amount of travel is part of the job, averaging about 50% to 85%, and candidates should be prepared for extended assignments that may last for long stretches, including several months.
Compensation
Pay is stated at $25 to $37, depending on experience.
Key Duties
- Coordinate day-to-day activity at the worksite.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal compliance requirements.
- Verify that contractors have completed the required training.
- Identify and correct rule breaches when they occur.
- Prepare daily activity reports.
- Protect on-track work by following federal on-track safety rules.
Experience and Job Requirements
The employer is seeking someone with at least 2 years of experience in a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT rail division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consulting environment. Experience in the Maintenance of Way department is preferred.
Applicants should be comfortable using basic technology such as Citrix, email, phone, texting tools, Android tablets, and smartphones. Strong organization, attention to detail, and solid verbal and written communication skills are essential. The role also calls for familiarity with railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices, along with the ability to develop strong client relationships. Candidates must be willing to complete required federal, client, and company training.
Work Conditions
This is a field-based position. It requires communicating clearly in English, including speaking, reading, and writing. Candidates must be willing to travel or drive long distances and must be able to stand for extended periods, walk on uneven terrain, and work in dusty, noisy, and extreme hot or cold conditions. Good vision is necessary, including near, far, color, and peripheral vision. The role also requires lifting up to 50 pounds.
Education
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
