Role overview
This position sits within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service and supports the smooth, safe daily operation of a busy prison. As an Operational Support Grade, you’ll be part of a collaborative team handling a mix of security, administrative, and practical duties across the establishment.
What the role involves
The work is varied and active. You may be stationed at the gate carrying out security checks and searches, overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job combines desk-based tasks with physical work, including lifting, carrying, and walking escorts to vehicles around the prison grounds.
Working pattern and travel
This role includes a range of shifts, with weekend and night work as part of the rota. Shift times are fixed, so punctual travel to and from the prison is essential. The site may be in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated for the vacancy.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This opportunity may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role and could be a strong starting point for a career in the prison service.
Impact and career development
Although contact with prisoners is usually limited, there may be occasional interaction depending on the prison. The role gives you valuable insight into how a prison operates and can open doors to other positions within the service, including the chance to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and benefits
You will receive training plus opportunities to grow and progress. Alongside base pay, the package includes annual leave, paid public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits, and several employee support and savings schemes.
Pay and leave
- Salary: £29,432
- Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
Additional benefits
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Membership of the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
Other information
This is described as an extraordinary role with the chance to support public protection and contribute to positive change through the work carried out in prisons.
