The role focuses on system studies for substations, renewable generation, grid interconnection, and industrial power networks. The ideal professional should bring strong hands-on experience in electrical network analysis, grid compliance, and study tools used for transmission and renewable integration projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out power system studies for substations and renewable energy grid integration projects.
- Work on steady-state and dynamic studies such as transient stability, voltage stability, harmonic analysis, power quality, LVRT, and fault ride-through.
- Perform short-circuit analysis and support switchgear and circuit breaker sizing in line with applicable standards.
- Execute insulation coordination studies, including cable energization, transformer energization, reactor energization, TRV, lightning impact, very fast transient overvoltage for GIS, switching studies, power oscillation damping, and subsynchronous resonance studies.
- Conduct arc flash analysis according to international requirements.
- Support contingency studies for grid component design.
- Analyze ferroresonance behavior for transformers and EHV cables.
- Carry out secondary arc current extinction studies to enable successful auto-reclosing studies.
- Determine surge arrester duty, including residual voltage and energy level.
- Perform load flow assessments to identify overloaded network elements under renewable capacity addition scenarios.
- Identify reactive power compensation needs across multiple renewable integration scenarios.
- Model renewable sources, particularly solar, battery energy storage systems, and wind generation.
- Assess operational challenges associated with solar and wind technologies.
- Verify grid code compliance before plant energization across relevant operating conditions.
- Carry out motor acceleration and re-acceleration studies for industrial applications and motor groupings.
- Review available technology options in the market for conducting system studies.
- Estimate missing input data and parameters using project specifications and applicable standards when exact values are not available.
- Interpret country-specific grid codes, with preference for Middle East requirements.
- Propose optimization options while maintaining grid code compliance.
- Identify issues that may arise during grid integration and recommend corrective solutions.
- Support protection relay selection and coordination studies, including overcurrent, earth fault, unit protection, distance, motor, generator, and grid tie-in protection.
- Model phase-shifting transformers where required.
- Interact effectively with customers, utilities, and off-takers during approval of grid impact studies.
- Contribute to HVDC and STATCOM project studies, including electromagnetic compatibility-related evaluations.
Technical Environment
The role requires working knowledge of DIgSILENT, PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, HOMER, CYME, MATLAB, Mipower, EMTP-RV, CDEGS, and AVEVA.
Required Knowledge
- Strong background in power system studies for substations, renewable power plants, and industrial electrical networks.
- Good understanding of renewable generation technologies such as solar PV inverters and wind energy systems.
- Exposure to HVDC, FACTS solutions such as STATCOM, SVC, and SCG.
- Solid familiarity with IEC, IEEE, DEP, and other industrial standards.
- Ability to work with grid codes and utility approval processes, especially in the Middle East region.
- Hands-on experience with major power system study software platforms.
- Capability to evaluate engineering trade-offs and provide practical, standards-based solutions.
