Job description
Role overview
The Youth Worker supports young people involved in youth justice matters by providing day-to-day supervision, guidance and practical assistance. The position is based in Mackay, Queensland, and may require travel across the region, including occasional overnight stays.
Key duties
- Deliver parts of core youth programs, either independently or alongside colleagues, to help implement the service response plan created by Youth Justice Caseworkers.
- Offer supervision and support to young people while ensuring services are delivered in line with legislation, delegated authority, departmental procedures and current best practice.
- Work with government and community stakeholders, service providers and families to help young people access the supports and networks identified in their service response plan.
- Provide culturally appropriate individual and family support to assist young people with bail compliance, court orders and community reintegration.
- Contribute as an active member of a multidisciplinary team made up of internal and external stakeholders to achieve strong casework and case management outcomes.
- Keep skills and knowledge current through learning, development and training activities relevant to the role.
- Prepare clear and accessible case notes and records that support planning, review meetings and ongoing case management.
- Help the Program Coordinator or Team Coordinator create weekly rosters for young people on supervised orders and bail programs.
- Carry out routine checks of service locations and program equipment to confirm safety requirements are met and activities are run safely.
- Build capability in contemporary youth justice practice and participate in training to deliver services aligned with best practice.
- Show cultural capability, or a commitment to developing it, to help foster an inclusive workplace and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural connections and community partnerships.
Mandatory requirements
- A current unrestricted Class C driver licence is required, as government vehicles form part of the normal duties.
- The role is regulated employment because it involves services for children and young people, so a valid Blue Card must be linked to the organisation before commencement.
- Applicants should be prepared for travel within the region for site visits and attendance at other regional or departmental offices, including possible overnight travel.
- Although not a formal requirement, it is strongly preferred that the successful applicant be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
- Where available, applicants are asked to provide a referee who is Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and can speak to the applicant’s background, knowledge, skills and experience in relation to cultural capability.
