Job description

About the company

Crown Equipment has been supporting businesses and communities across New Zealand for more than four decades as a specialist in material handling equipment. With a broad sales and service network spanning the North and South Islands, the company is recognised for its strong market reputation, skilled people, quality products, dependable parts and service support, and advanced technology.

About the role

This is a permanent full-time opportunity based in the Christchurch workshop. You will work as part of a close, supportive team within a large organisation, carrying out repairs and maintenance on a substantial fleet of customer forklifts, along with pre-delivery work on new units.

The role covers a wide range of forklift types, including both battery-electric and internal combustion models, giving you the chance to expand your technical capability across multiple machine types. You will work at pace, use your trade knowledge, and help deliver a high standard of service so customers can keep their businesses running smoothly.

There is also scope to learn more about Crown products and build your career within the wider business. Product knowledge is an advantage, but training resources are available for someone eager to learn.

Working pattern

This position is Monday to Friday, with the possibility of paid overtime. An optional four-day week with ten-hour shifts may be available, subject to conditions.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in material handling equipment, auto electrical work, diesel mechanics, motor mechanics, or hydraulics, or hold a relevant trade qualification. An equivalent overseas qualification will also be considered.

You should bring a customer-focused, practical approach and be confident solving problems in a collaborative team environment. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are important, along with attention to detail. You will also need to be comfortable using IT systems, adaptable as a learner, and physically fit enough for manual handling tasks.

A full pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol testing, is required. A valid driver’s licence is also essential. As part of initial and ongoing training, you must be able to travel to Australia, which means holding a New Zealand passport or being eligible to obtain an Australian visa.

Benefits

In return, the role offers a market-related hourly rate of $34 to $37 per hour depending on experience, plus the opportunity to earn additional hours at time-and-a-half. You will join a supportive team and work in a learning-focused environment with real career growth pathways. The business also offers opportunities to build a long-term career, including progression into trade or sales roles.

Career progression

The company highlights strong internal career development, with many employees staying for long periods and moving through varied roles over time. For those starting at entry level, there may be pathways into trade, sales, and other areas of the organisation.

Additional information

This is an onsite role in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. The company is described as the New Zealand lift truck market leader.
