Job description

About the role

Fraunhofer IIS in Dresden is looking for a working student to support AI and data engineering activities in its Application and System Engineering Group. The institute works on applied research and develops solutions in artificial intelligence, microelectronics, sensor technology, and signal processing. In this position, you will help build adaptive systems and contribute to the European APECS pilot line for advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration.

What you'll do

  • Build and support software modules for AI- and data-focused applications.
  • Help design, refine, and run data pipelines, processing steps, and data management processes.
  • Assist with preparing, structuring, and checking datasets used for AI systems.
  • Contribute to knowledge organization work such as taxonomies, ontologies, and related data structures when needed.
  • Support experimentation, evaluation, and deployment of AI models.
  • Work in an agile environment and follow modern software engineering practices.
  • Prepare and keep technical documentation up to date for development and knowledge transfer.

What we're looking for

You should be an enrolled student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or another relevant technical discipline. The role calls for practical programming ability, ideally in Python or another modern language, along with familiarity with version control and software engineering fundamentals. You should also have exposure to machine learning, generative AI, or other data-driven systems, plus experience with datasets, data preparation, data quality, or data engineering concepts. Interest in semantic technologies, knowledge representation, ontologies, or knowledge graphs is important. Knowledge of Linux, Git, virtual environments, and container tools will be useful.

Additional details

The institute offers flexible working hours that can be adapted to your studies, including reduced hours before exams and increased availability during semester breaks. Weekly working time will be agreed individually; the working-student role is planned for 20 hours per week. If arranged as an internship, the minimum duration is three months. Working days can be set flexibly. After graduation, there may be opportunities to continue in a full-time or part-time role within the institute. This is a fixed-term position, and the working days can also be arranged flexibly within that contract. Applicants are asked to submit a PDF application package containing a cover letter, resume, and certificates. Questions about the application process can be directed to recruiter Patricia Buchmann at eas-personal@iis.fraunhofer.de.

Equal opportunity

Fraunhofer welcomes applications from people of all ages, genders, nationalities, ethnic and social backgrounds, religions, beliefs, disabilities, sexual orientations, and identities. Candidates with severe disabilities will be given priority when qualifications are otherwise equal.
