Job description
Role summary
This position involves fitting, aligning, and welding fabricated, cast, and forged parts into structural assemblies such as machine frames, tanks, pressure vessels, furnace shells, buildings, and piping systems by following blueprints and metallurgy requirements.
Core duties
- Choose the correct pipe size and related materials or equipment based on job specifications.
- Plan layouts and welding sequences using knowledge of geometry, metal properties, machining behavior, weld shrinkage, and welding methods.
- Use welding processes such as Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, and Shielded Metal Arc when needed.
- Position, align, and fit parts together in different body positions for assembly.
- Clamp, bolt, and weld components like piping systems, plate, pipe, tube, and structural shapes using arc or arc-gas welding equipment, including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead work.
- Tack weld assemblies as required.
- Guide the electrode or gun by hand along the weld line while controlling arc length, travel speed, and movement to achieve the proper fusion and bead quality.
- Add filler rod manually when needed to build weld metal.
- Clean or prepare weld joints and work areas using tools such as wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths.
- Repair damaged or cracked parts, fill holes, and remove excess weld material, slag, and spatter using gouges, scrapers, grinders, or chippers.
- Preheat workpieces when required and cut metal plates or structural sections as part of the job.
- Inspect welds to confirm bead size and other specifications are met.
- Load, move, and unload materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and workpieces during installation.
- Carry out minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Follow respiratory protection requirements when applicable.
- Pass employer performance tests or standard certification tests and work only within the procedures you are certified for.
- Comply with all safety rules, project rules, and site requirements.
- Take on additional tasks as needed, including paint booth work, media blasting, housekeeping, and safety engagement.
Working hours
The shop operates four 10-hour shifts each week, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Experience and skill expectations
- At least 3 years of welding experience is required.
- You should be able to picture objects in three dimensions from drawings and plans.
- You need the ability to compare line, shape, and form differences accurately.
Physical demands
This role includes the following physical requirements: standing 50% of the time, walking 20%, and sitting 30%. It also involves lifting and carrying up to 35 lb. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and fingering are part of the work profile, with handling and fingering performed constantly. Compensation
The current estimated pay range for this role is $21 to $28 per hour. Final compensation may vary based on experience, education, key skills, location, client requirements, market conditions, and internal pay equity.
