Job description

About Baba Nyumbani

Baba Nyumbani is a faith-based micro-village in Kenya that provides holistic care for orphaned and vulnerable children. For more than 20 years, the organisation has supported children through housing, healthcare, nutrition, education, and life-skills development. Its approach focuses on helping children move from crisis to capability, with the goal of building dignified, independent, and sustainable futures rather than dependency. The organisation was created in response to the large number of children in Kenya who are orphaned or vulnerable.

About the Role

This is a residential caregiving role rather than a typical job. The organisation is looking for mature, committed people to live within the community and serve as a family presence for the children in care. This posting is for the Relief Village Aunt role.

The Relief Village Aunt supports the lead household and fully assumes the parenting and household leadership role whenever the House Parents are away due to leave, training, or any other absence. The position suits someone with emotional maturity, adaptability, and a genuine care for children who can provide stable and loving continuity in the home. It can also serve as a pathway to a future Lead House Parent position. The role requires living on site, being fully involved in the everyday life of the home, and making a long-term commitment to the children.

Because many of the children have experienced loss and instability, they need consistency, care, and a dependable adult presence above all else.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer day-to-day nurturing care, including meals, routines, hygiene, rest, homework help, and emotional support.
  • Maintain a home environment that is safe, warm, structured, orderly, and family-like.
  • Demonstrate healthy relationships, communication, conflict handling, and life skills through personal example.
  • Support children’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual growth together with the program team.
  • Coordinate with Baba Nyumbani social workers on each child’s care plan and promptly raise any concerns.
  • Follow child safeguarding rules at all times without exception.
  • Handle daily domestic operations and household budgeting in a responsible and transparent way.
  • Take part in training, supervision, and team meetings for continuous development in the role.
  • Step in fully to lead the household and parenting responsibilities when the Lead Couple is away.
  • Ensure children experience steady, uninterrupted care during transitions and absences.
  • Support the Lead Couple in the normal day-to-day running of the home.
  • Build real, trusting relationships with the children independently of the Lead Couple’s presence.

What We Offer

Baba Nyumbani provides a support structure for residential caregivers, including accommodation, utilities, salary, statutory benefits, training, supervision, and rest provisions.

  • Fully provided on-site accommodation, with your home inside the community.
  • Utilities covered, including water, electricity, and cooking fuel.
  • A competitive salary in addition to the benefits above.
  • Statutory benefits aligned with Kenyan law, including NSSF, SHIF health coverage, and Housing Levy contributions on the cash salary component.
  • Initial training plus ongoing development in child care, child psychology, and family-based care.
  • Regular supervision and emotional support from the social work and programme teams.
  • Annual leave and rest arrangements, with the Relief Aunt maintaining continuity of care.
  • The opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children who need consistent care and stability.

Who We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is selected more for character than for formal qualifications. The role calls for patience, warmth, steadiness, and a deep commitment to caring for children.

  • A clear and proven love for children, along with a strong desire to provide a stable and nurturing home.
  • Emotional maturity, resilience, and the ability to remain steady for children who have experienced loss.
  • Experience raising children, caring for children, or working in child care, caregiving, teaching, or family support.
  • The willingness and ability to live on site and commit to the role for the long term.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to model healthy communication and conflict resolution.
  • Confidence and maturity to guide children and adults when difficult conversations are needed.
  • High integrity and a lifestyle that sets a positive example for children.
  • The ability to communicate kindly with children and with the local community.
  • Openness to training, supervision, and ongoing learning.
  • Full commitment to child safeguarding and to the organisation’s values.
  • Flexibility and readiness to take on full household leadership when required.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

These are not compulsory, but they will be considered an advantage:

  • Training or certification in early childhood development, child care, social work, counselling, or a related area.
  • Experience in temporary residential care, foster care, or community caregiving.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, child psychology, or psychosocial support.
  • Basic experience in household budgeting and financial management.
  • Experience supporting children with varied needs, including trauma, illness, or disability.
  • Alignment with the faith-based mission and values of Baba Nyumbani.

Application Instructions

Applicants should clearly state the role and location they are interested in. This advert mentions Community House Parents or Relief Village Aunt, and the locations Kitale in Trans-Nzoia or Rarieda in Siaya. Couples applying for the Lead role are expected to apply together, with both individuals’ details included.

Submit your application by email with the subject line: Village Aunt — [Location] — [Your Full Name(s)]. Include a current CV or resume for each applicant, a cover letter explaining your background with children and why the role matters to you, copies of relevant certificates or training where available, and two professional references.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Baba Nyumbani is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, disability, HIV status, religion, national origin, or any other protected characteristic under Kenyan law. Applicants from local communities around each site are especially encouraged to apply.

Child Safeguarding Requirements

Because the role involves living with and caring for children, selected candidates must complete a full background check, provide a certificate of good conduct, submit character references, and sign the Child Protection Policy before starting. These steps are mandatory and reflect the organisation’s commitment to child safety.
