Job description

Overview

The Communications and Marketing Department supports The New York Public Library’s mission by promoting its services, collections, locations, programs, events, exhibitions, and other offerings to wide-ranging audiences in New York City and beyond. The team works to position NYPL as a leading cultural and educational institution while attracting and engaging new communities.

The Video Producer is responsible for planning, shooting, and editing video for the Library’s channels, with a strong focus on social media. This role also supports broader communications content needs and multimedia workflows, helping maintain a consistent brand presence across platforms. Basic audio production is also part of the job.

Key focus areas

  • Guide short-form video strategy and production for NYPL’s social channels.
  • Handle end-to-end video and audio production work for the Communications and Marketing team.
  • Maintain the department’s production calendar for video and related multimedia projects.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors and partners on timelines, deliverables, and production needs.
  • Share video best practices with colleagues who support production work.
  • Help teammates identify and pitch strong video concepts.
  • Build content that reflects NYPL’s voice and the needs of different branches and divisions.
  • Strengthen social-first video output, multimedia workflows, and internal asset tracking.

Role expectations

Within the first month, the person in this role is expected to begin producing assigned video content, learn NYPL’s social and multimedia needs, and start building relationships across the organization to source material. By three months, they should understand NYPL’s voice and content streams well enough to independently pitch and create video. By six months and beyond, they are expected to own video production for the Communications and Marketing team and use video to drive engagement on key social channels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the full video production process, including concept development, scripting, filming, editing, captioning, and basic motion graphics.
  • Create video concepts and formats based on NYPL initiatives, exhibitions, programs, cultural moments, and social trends.
  • Shoot video using phones, DSLR or mirrorless cameras, gimbals, microphones, lights, and related equipment.
  • Edit footage and build simple motion graphics and captions in Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
  • Run the video production calendar and keep track of deadlines, deliverables, priorities, and cross-department needs.
  • Manage the organization’s YouTube and Vimeo channels.
  • Work with internal teams and occasionally outside vendors, agencies, and freelancers to produce polished video content that supports NYPL’s digital presence and larger multimedia initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required experience, education, and skills

  • A bachelor’s degree, or at least 4 additional years of relevant experience in place of a degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience producing short-form narrative video content.
  • Hands-on experience with production tools such as phones, DSLR cameras, gimbals, microphones, and lighting gear.
  • Proven ability to manage video projects from idea stage through final delivery while working with stakeholders, timelines, and feedback.
  • Strong understanding of social media video practices and current trends on Instagram Reels and TikTok.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
  • Ability to create basic motion graphics and edit images.
  • Basic audio editing capability, including tasks like leveling and trimming audio in Adobe Audition for podcasts or exhibition guides.
  • Awareness of accessibility considerations in video production.
  • Comfort adapting tone and style for different NYPL channels.
  • Strong organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Interest in new tools and emerging products.
  • Helpful background or familiarity with publishing, libraries, literature, or cultural institutions.
