Job description
About the role
The Just-in-Time AI lab at the NUS School of Computing is looking for a part-time research assistant with a UI/UX focus to help shape interactive, AI-enabled tools for research discovery, knowledge exploration, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The work centers on building web interfaces that make it easier to move through large and complex information spaces, using clear, data-heavy visual presentations to reveal links between people and ideas. You will work closely with a postdoctoral researcher and gain practical experience at the meeting point of design, visual analytics, and human-centred AI.
About the lab
The lab develops prudent AI for high-stakes settings with limited data, creating interpretable and auditable systems for anomaly detection, time-series modelling, and trustworthy NLP. Its work has appeared in venues such as ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, ICDE, and VLDB. A key focus across these projects is making model reasoning understandable to users so they can inspect and trust the evidence behind it. This position supports that user-facing layer directly.
Key work
- Build interactive interfaces that support information exploration, sensemaking, and decision-making.
- Design refined analytical views and visualisation-heavy screens with rich data content.
- Convert dense, multidimensional information into interfaces that are easy to understand and adapt.
- Improve designs through feedback cycles and usability testing.
Required profile
- Strong portfolio showing UX/UI work for web applications or AI-driven interactive products.
- Comfort using Figma or a similar design platform.
- Good understanding of information visualisation concepts and tools, including D3.js or comparable libraries.
- Ability to turn complex datasets into simple and effective user experiences.
Preferred background
- Exposure to HCI, visual analytics, or human-centred AI.
- Experience designing data-rich, AI-assisted, or analytical interfaces.
- Front-end prototyping experience with React, Vue, JavaScript, HTML, or CSS.
Hours, eligibility, and compensation
This opportunity is open only to current full-time NUS undergraduate students. The expected commitment is about 14 hours per week during term time and up to about 35 hours per week during semester breaks, although these arrangements are temporary and may be revised. International undergraduates may work up to 16 hours per week during term under NUS/MOM rules, and this role fits within that limit. Pay follows the NUS Student Work Scheme (NSWS) rate structure and is determined by the student's level of study.
How to apply
Send your CV, portfolio link, and GitHub profile, including any information-visualisation or D3.js examples, to dcstunga@nus.edu.sg.
