About SMEC
SMEC is a global engineering consultancy that contributes to the delivery of major infrastructure, transport, water, energy and urban development work. Its history includes participation in landmark projects such as the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and its current focus remains on creating practical outcomes that improve communities.
As part of the Surbana Jurong Group, SMEC provides access to an international network of more than 16,000 professionals in over 40 countries, while still keeping the day-to-day experience close to local project teams.
The company describes itself as family-friendly and offers flexible working arrangements along with benefits such as 18 weeks of universal paid parental leave. It also promotes an inclusive workplace that supports gender equity, LGBTI+ inclusion and First Nations representation, backed by professional networks, role models, mentoring and sponsorship opportunities.
The Opportunity
This role is for an Undergraduate Engineer who wants paid, practical experience while continuing studies. The position gives students the chance to work on active projects, strengthen technical capabilities and better understand the consulting environment.
Opportunities are available across multiple disciplines, including civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transport and roads/highways, water engineering and environmental engineering, sustainability and energy, and electrical/mechanical engineering.
What You Will Do
In this role, you will support project teams on real engineering work and develop experience across both technical and consulting settings. You may also gain exposure to site-based and field activities where appropriate.
Who This Role Suits
This opportunity is aimed at students currently studying engineering, including civil, structural, environmental, mechanical, electrical or related areas. It is best suited to people with an interest in infrastructure, sustainability or the built environment who are self-driven, inquisitive and comfortable working in collaborative teams.
Why Join SMEC
Working with SMEC means being involved in major projects that make a visible difference in communities. You will gain hands-on experience while studying, learn from experienced engineers and industry leaders, and receive mentorship, structured learning and on-the-job development. The role also offers a pathway into the Graduate Development Program.
You will be encouraged to ask questions, take initiative and start building your career early.
Application Requirements
Applicants must provide a CV, a cover letter that states the preferred discipline and location, and an academic transcript.
Additional Information
SMEC describes its culture as one that values talent, dedication, teamwork and a fun workplace, with a collaborative approach to solving problems creatively. The organisation invites candidates to contribute to positive global impact.
