About the Role

General Legal is seeking a highly competent and legally astute Triage Paralegal to act as the primary point of contact for new client matters. This role involves assessing the nature and complexity of incoming legal issues, determining the appropriate course of action, and ensuring efficient resolution. The ideal candidate will excel in a dynamic environment, possess strong judgment, and be meticulous in managing tasks to prevent anything from being overlooked. This is a critical position at the nexus of legal practice and operational efficiency, significantly influencing client satisfaction and firm productivity.

About General Legal, Inc.

General Legal is an innovative, AI-driven law firm dedicated to providing superior commercial contract services with enhanced speed and predictability compared to conventional firms. We leverage advanced AI workflows and experienced U.S.-barred attorneys to manage the entire lifecycle of contract drafting, review, and negotiation. Operating with the agility of a startup, we utilize modern technology, outcome-based pricing, and a remote-friendly work model, offering substantial equity to our team members.

What You'll Do

Matter Intake & Scoping: Take ownership of the intake process for all incoming client matters, meticulously reviewing submissions to ascertain their legal nature and complexity, and deciding on the most suitable next steps. You will adeptly gather necessary information through precise questioning, ensuring a smooth experience for clients and attorneys. Matters will be categorized and prioritized based on urgency, client importance, legal domain, and attorney availability.

Paralegal Work & Direct Handling: Independently manage standard paralegal duties, including minor agreement modifications, entity filings, NDA reviews, contract summarization, template completion, and document organization. You will also draft client communications and update standard document templates as instructed. Matters will be prepared for attorney review with concise summaries, relevant documentation, and proposed actions.

Routing & Assignment: Direct matters requiring attorney intervention to the appropriate individual or team, considering complexity, specialization, and current workload. You will maintain an up-to-date understanding of attorney capacity to help distribute tasks evenly. Urgent or unclear issues will be escalated promptly and confidently, providing sufficient context for immediate attorney action.

Tracking & Follow-Up: Oversee the entire lifecycle of a matter from intake to completion, ensuring the firm's matter management system is consistently updated. You will proactively follow up with clients and attorneys regarding outstanding items, pending deliverables, and approaching deadlines. Stalled matters will be identified, obstacles highlighted, and issues driven to resolution.

Client Communication: Serve as a reliable contact for clients, providing updates on matter status, expected timelines, and subsequent steps. You will translate complex legal concepts into easily understandable language, communicating with assurance to stakeholders at all levels.

Process & Systems: Collaborate with attorneys and the engineering team to assess, develop, and enhance intake and routing workflows. Analyze trends in matter volume, routing efficiency, and resolution times to identify opportunities for operational improvement. Document and maintain standard operating procedures for triage operations as the firm expands.

What We're Looking For

Background & Experience: A paralegal certificate or equivalent practical experience is required, with a bachelor's degree being advantageous. We seek 3-5 years of experience in paralegal work, legal operations, or a similar capacity within a law firm, legal tech company, or in-house legal department. A strong understanding of commercial contracts and general corporate law is essential, enabling you to effectively evaluate agreements. Prior experience in a startup or fast-paced growth environment is highly desirable, demonstrating comfort with ambiguity and process development. Candidates located in the Pacific or Central Time zones are preferred.

How You Work: Exceptional organizational skills are paramount, ensuring all tasks are tracked, nothing is missed, and communication is proactive. You must possess strong written and verbal communication abilities, capable of managing expectations for both internal teams and external clients. A clear understanding of your capacity for independent work, alongside the judgment to know when to involve an attorney, is crucial. You should have a low tolerance for errors and a systematic approach to prevent them. Communication should be clear, confident, and friendly. The ability to thrive amidst variety and switch contexts rapidly without losing attention to detail is key.

Bonus Points: A tech-savvy approach, including familiarity with project management tools like Notion, CRMs, or workflow automation software, is a plus. Enthusiasm for technology and the prospect of working in an AI-enhanced legal service environment is encouraged. A drive for improving processes, rather than just executing them, is highly valued.

The Structure

This position is based remotely, with periodic in-person team gatherings for collaborative work, strategic planning, and social events. While these onsite events are important, the role otherwise supports flexible remote work arrangements.

Why This Role

This is not a typical support paralegal position. You will be granted significant ownership of incoming matters from the outset, with the autonomy to manage tasks independently and gain direct insight into the firm's operational dynamics. It is an ideal opportunity for individuals aiming to develop processes, utilize cutting-edge tools, and advance their careers within a growing startup environment in the legal sector.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual base salary ranges from $80,000 to $100,000, determined by relevant experience. The company offers a 401(k) plan with a 5% employer match. Health and dental insurance premiums are fully covered by the employer, with partial financial assistance for dependents. Participation in annual team onsite events is included. A stipend for training and professional development is provided. The firm is open to discussing additional benefits that enhance productivity and overall well-being.

General Legal is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and is an equal opportunity employer. All candidates applying for U.S. positions must possess legal authorization to work in the United States and maintain U.S. residency at the time of application.
