Job description
About the role
Hamilton City Council works to enhance the wellbeing of a rapidly expanding city. Within the Infrastructure and Assets Group, this position helps plan, deliver, and maintain the transport and infrastructure networks that keep Hamilton connected and moving.
As a Transport Infrastructure Compliance Technician, you will oversee vehicle crossing applications from start to finish and make sure every project is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with council, regulatory, and quality expectations.
This is a practical role that blends fieldwork, technical evaluation, and direct contact with customers and stakeholders. It suits someone who enjoys being on site and applying their problem-solving skills to real infrastructure issues.
What you'll do
- Handle vehicle crossing applications through the full process, including design review, compliance coordination, invoicing, and documentation.
- Confirm that all required approvals are secured, such as traffic management plans and corridor access permissions.
- Carry out site set-out for vehicle crossings and check that work aligns with RITS standards.
- Review site conditions such as gradients, visibility, stormwater handling, and safety controls.
- Make sure construction does not negatively affect existing assets like footpaths, utilities, or street infrastructure.
- Perform inspections, audits, and quality checks during construction.
- Issue certificates of compliance once crossing work has been completed successfully.
- Work closely with builders and developers to offer practical guidance and reduce rework.
- Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and outside stakeholders to support timely delivery.
- Provide clear technical advice and respond to customer questions.
- Detect and manage non-compliance, including supporting enforcement action where needed.
- Identify, document, and help address any damage to infrastructure.
- Keep accurate records to support strong compliance and monitoring processes.
What we're looking for
- A Diploma in Civil Engineering is preferred, or another relevant Level 5 qualification.
- Three to five years of experience in roading, infrastructure, or civil construction, including inspection or auditing work.
- Hands-on experience in network maintenance or civil construction.
- The ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of traffic management principles is desirable.
- Familiarity with infrastructure standards such as RITS is an advantage.
- Strong planning, coordination, and organisational capability.
- A full, clean driver's licence.
Success in this role looks like
- Working effectively on your own while balancing several priorities.
- Maintaining a sharp focus on detail and quality.
- Communicating confidently with both technical specialists and non-technical people.
- Taking a proactive, solution-led approach to challenges.
- Building trusted relationships with developers and contractors.
- Showing a strong commitment to health and safety and high-quality outcomes.
- Enjoying a role that combines site activity, coordination, and customer engagement.
Salary
The salary is approximately $85,000, depending on your skills and experience.
What we offer
- A flexible working approach with an award-winning flexibility policy.
- Opportunities to grow through professional development.
- Two wellbeing days each year.
- Free health insurance through Unimed, including hospital and surgery-grade cover, plus discounted family membership rates.
- Free annual health checks and flu vaccinations.
- The option to buy additional annual leave.
- Reimbursement for eye testing and glasses costs.
- Discounted offers from local businesses, including gyms, cafes, dentists, hairdressers, and more.
