Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Thermal Engineer to join the Spaceflight Hardware Engineering Group in Alton, Hampshire. This role involves the thermal design, detailed analysis, and verification of platforms, payloads, and hardware integral to BAE Systems’ spaceflight missions. You will collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, system architects, and mission teams to guarantee effective thermal control, enabling systems to function reliably in the demanding environment of space. The role requires defining, sizing, and selecting both passive and active thermal components considering the constraints of Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) and the usage of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware based on mission needs.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute thermal design, analysis, verification, and validation for spaceflight hardware and payloads.
- Engage closely with cross-disciplinary teams including mechanical engineering and system architecture to ensure robust thermal control.
- Select suitable passive and active thermal hardware components in alignment with mission SWaP and COTS requirements.
Requirements
- Substantial experience in spacecraft, planetary, or subsystem thermal engineering, encompassing design, analysis, requirement setting, interfacing, and hardware testing.
- Strong understanding of thermal engineering principles specific to space systems.
- Familiarity with ECSS standards and spacecraft thermal design methodologies.
- Proficiency using thermal analysis software such as Ansys Thermal Desktop, ESATAN-TMS, Systema-Thermica, or equivalents.
- Knowledge of cutting-edge thermal technologies and their application in spaceflight.
- Proven involvement in spacecraft thermal testing campaigns.
- Possession of or ability to obtain high-level UK security clearance.
Additional Information
This role is based in Alton, Hampshire, with a hybrid working pattern (3 days onsite, 2 days remote). Security and export control restrictions apply, which may require continuous UK residency of 5–10 years for vetting. The company emphasizes inclusion and welcomes candidates from diverse backgrounds. Reasonable adjustments during recruitment can be arranged upon request.
