Job description

Job purpose

This role is responsible for carrying out installation, repair, and maintenance work on instrumentation and control systems across machinery, equipment, and fixtures. The aim is to keep operations running efficiently with as little downtime as possible, while following EHS guidelines and contributing to ongoing improvement efforts.

Key responsibilities

  • Respond to instrument and control equipment failures, as well as scheduled, preventive, and predictive maintenance tasks, with limited supervision and within the required time frame so production interruptions are kept to a minimum.
  • Review assigned jobs, assess the technical needs, and choose the correct tools and equipment required to complete the work.
  • Identify the cause of instrumentation and control faults and carry out troubleshooting on plant and equipment breakdowns with minimal guidance.
  • Carry out all maintenance activities in line with safety procedures, maintenance plans, and operational requirements, and ensure equipment calibrations are completed according to schedule and business needs.
  • Use the computerized maintenance system (SAP) to request spare parts from the warehouse and keep accurate records of maintenance work performed.
  • Track recurring failures, suggest suitable modifications to eliminate the issue, and implement the necessary corrective changes.
  • Support and guide newly hired instrument mechanics so they become familiar with the plant and are prepared to perform maintenance tasks effectively.
  • Work continuously to improve EHS and plant/equipment performance by taking part in initiatives such as the Suggestion Scheme, 5S, Hazard Reporting, TAMAHAL, RCFA, Kaizen, and similar programs.
  • Spot and report abnormalities, arrange repair or replacement of damaged or worn parts, and ensure the work area is left clean and tidy.
  • Assist other departments with troubleshooting and repair of faulty equipment when needed.
  • Carry out any additional duties assigned by the supervisor or technician.

Qualifications and experience

  • A diploma in a relevant discipline and completion of PEC Craft Training are required.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience after the diploma, preferably in a smelter environment or another heavy industrial setting.
  • No prior experience is required after completing PEC Training.

Skills and knowledge

  • Strong spoken and written English skills.
  • Working familiarity with maintenance tools and basic computer usage.
  • Hands-on exposure to installation work, fault diagnosis, and instrumentation calibration.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, manuals, and instructions.
  • Knowledge of PLC control systems, including maintenance and troubleshooting.

Additional information

The role requires a focus on safety, reliability, and continuous improvement in a heavy industrial environment. The technician is expected to work independently on most assignments, support team members when needed, and help maintain efficient operations through timely maintenance and problem resolution.
