Job description
About the Role
Texas Sports Academy is a K-12 program for highly committed student-athletes who want strong academics alongside advanced athletic development. Students complete twice the usual academic material in a two-hour school day, following the same 2-Hour Learning approach used by Alpha School. This structure leaves the rest of the day open for intensive training with support from former professional and Division I athletes.
The school is looking for a Student Wellness Coach to help students strengthen confidence, focus, and resilience so they can perform well in both academics and sport. This position is centered on coaching and mentorship, with an emphasis on mindset, motivation, and everyday life skills rather than therapy, diagnosis, or treatment.
This is an entry-level opening, and applicants who are newly graduated or have around one to two years of experience are encouraged to apply.
What You Will Do
- Support students in building confidence and resilience by helping them handle performance pressure, peer situations, and the normal challenges that come with being a young athlete in a demanding setting.
- Work closely with coaches and student-support staff by sharing relevant day-to-day observations while still protecting each student’s privacy.
- Update parents on student engagement, progress, and goals, and help families understand how to reinforce positive habits at home.
- Guide students through the school’s learning platform so they can stay on track academically and athletically, troubleshoot common issues, and make the technology easier to use.
- Facilitate small-group sessions on practical topics such as recovering from setbacks, handling pre-event nerves, managing time well, and approaching competition in a healthy way.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is required. Degrees in psychology, education, kinesiology, social work, sports science, or a related discipline are considered an advantage.
- 0 to 2 years of experience is the target range for this position, and recent graduates are welcome.
- You should be comfortable communicating with children and teenagers, from younger students to older teens, in a respectful and relatable way.
- You need strong active-listening skills, including patience, curiosity, and the ability to understand what students are really saying before responding.
- You must be at ease in a sports-focused environment and able to understand competition, training, and performance pressure without minimizing or overstating them.
- Strong written and verbal communication is important, especially for concise, professional updates to parents and coaches.
- This role is remote and open only to candidates based in the United States.
- Helpful background includes coursework or experience with K–12 students, school or youth program internships, volunteering, camp counseling, or similar work.
- Experience in sports or athletics, whether as a player, coach, or support staff, is considered a plus.
- Bilingual English/Spanish ability is an added advantage for working with families across the campus community.
Additional Information
This is a non-clinical role focused on coaching support. The Student Wellness Coach does not conduct psychological assessments, provide diagnoses, offer counseling or therapy, or replace care from a licensed mental health professional.
Texas Sports Academy describes itself as an equal opportunity employer that hires based on character, capability, and mission fit.
Why Join
You will join a small, mission-led team creating a new model for K-12 education. The role offers mentorship, meaningful responsibility, and the opportunity to influence how emotional and mental development is built into everyday school life. It is well suited to someone early in their career who wants impactful work with young people and the chance to grow quickly alongside experienced educators and coaches.
