Job description

Position overview

This role is offered on a fixed-term full-time basis, though fixed-term part-time and casual arrangements may also be considered. There is potential for the appointment to be extended and/or made permanent.

Role purpose

The Sterilisation Technician will contribute to the Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) by handling the processing, distribution, storage, upkeep and delivery of reusable medical instruments for the Great Southern Health Service. The work must be carried out in line with AS/NZ 5369:2023 and within the standards expected of the service.

Workplace expectations

The person in this position is expected to actively support the organisation’s values, safety standards and quality improvement efforts, while following the Code of Conduct at all times. Adherence to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures is required, including confidentiality requirements and Work Health and Safety obligations.

Organisation profile

WA Country Health Service is the largest country health system in Australia and one of the largest globally. It delivers health services to around half a million people, including approximately 45,000 Aboriginal people, across a very large regional footprint of 2.5 million square kilometres. The service operates through seven regions and maintains a broad network of public hospitals, health services and health centres across rural and remote Western Australia.

Inclusion and workplace culture

WA Health is dedicated to removing discrimination from service delivery and actively welcomes applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally diverse communities, and people with disability. The organisation also supports flexible work practices where they align with delivering a quality health service, and maintains a smoke-free environment across all buildings, grounds and vehicles.

Employment conditions and screening

Applicants must meet citizenship and visa requirements for the type of appointment being offered. For fixed-term roles, a valid working visa is required. For permanent roles, applicants must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or hold a visa that allows them to live and work indefinitely in Australia.

Because this is a position of trust and responsibility, applicants will need to complete criminal record screening and integrity checks. Depending on the role, a Working With Children Check may also be required, along with a pre-employment health assessment. Referees may be contacted for comments on integrity and past ethical conduct. Any adverse information will be reviewed as part of the recruitment decision rather than automatically disqualifying a candidate.

Appointment is conditional on a satisfactory Pre-Employment Health Assessment (PEHA). If the assessment is not satisfactory, any job offer from WA Country Health Service may be withdrawn. Further details are covered in the attached PEHA policy.

Recruitment process notes

This selection process may be used not only for the current vacancy, but also to fill similar vacancies elsewhere within the health service. If the chosen candidate declines the offer or later leaves the position, the next most suitable applicant from this process may also be offered the role. These arrangements remain valid for twelve months from the date the authorised delegate approves the recruitment decision.

Employee benefits

Benefits may include the following, depending on operational needs:

  • 12% employer superannuation contribution into a fund of your choice
  • Access to generous salary packaging options
  • Professional development opportunities, including study leave or study assistance
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Flexible leave arrangements
  • Additional professional and location-based allowances

Application guidance

Applicants should submit their application online. A statement addressing the selection criteria is required, limited to 2–3 pages, along with a detailed CV that summarises relevant experience and shows how the applicant meets the role requirements. These documents should be prepared before starting the online process, as applicants will need to answer questions and upload supporting files during submission.

Applications submitted at or after 4:00 pm will not be accepted. Late applications and applications sent by email will not be considered.

For role-related queries, contact Erica Bannister on 08 9892 2645. If online application issues arise, Employee Services can be reached on 13 44 77 during business hours.
