Job description
Company Overview
Etsy is a worldwide marketplace focused on distinctive and creatively made goods. The company builds and maintains the technology that links millions of sellers and buyers across the globe, with a mission of keeping commerce human. This role sits within Etsy Inc., which may include team members from Etsy or Depop, and offers the chance to work on meaningful, large-scale engineering problems with a collaborative group of peers.
Role Summary
The Search Developer Platform team is hiring a Staff Site Reliability Engineer I to help design, support, and improve the systems that power Etsy search and enable shoppers to find handmade goods from around the world. The team owns the core infrastructure behind search and uses strong automation so the platform can scale without growing the team at the same pace.
This position will give you exposure to technologies such as Kubernetes, Go, large language models, model serving, search retrieval and ranking, and related platform components. The work focuses on building the services that support Etsy’s very large buyer and seller base.
This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager, Foundation. In addition to base pay, the role includes equity, an annual performance bonus, and competitive benefits as part of the total rewards package.
The role requires working from Etsy’s Dublin office once or twice each week, depending on how close you live to the office. Candidates within commuting distance of the Dublin office may be prioritized.
Team Environment
The Search Developer Platform group develops and runs the foundational systems that support Etsy’s search ecosystem. The team operates one layer below product features, focusing on the systems, abstractions, and developer experience that keep search infrastructure dependable, scalable, and simple to adopt. Their work helps many teams move faster and more safely while keeping the marketplace available and responsive at very large scale.
What You Will Do
- Own important platform systems used across search, including Kubernetes-based runtime environments and CI/CD and deployment tooling.
- Partner with platform engineers, ML teams, SREs, and product collaborators to shape standards, improve platforms, and guide technical decisions for a cloud-based high-availability search stack.
- Create developer tooling and self-service platforms such as deployment workflows, observability support, Bazel-based workflows, and search-focused CI/CD systems that lower friction at scale.
- Carry operational responsibility for business-critical services, including participation in on-call, while steadily improving reliability, maintainability, and the developer experience.
- Continuously learn and work in an agile delivery environment to stay aligned with team goals and delivery commitments.
- Identify pain points in the search platform and ship improvements that measurably enhance developer productivity.
- Monitor, measure, and troubleshoot infrastructure and services that run large-scale applications.
- Automate repetitive operational work and reduce toil wherever possible.
- Participate in on-call rotation and look for ways to lower support burden, prevent technical debt, and reduce operational load.
- Take on additional related responsibilities as needed, which may change over time in line with business needs and local law.
Skills and Experience
Success in this role depends on strong technical depth, clear communication, and the ability to work well with others. You should be comfortable solving complex engineering problems and improving systems you did not originally build.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering and coding ability, including the ability to produce high-performance, production-ready code.
- At least 6 years of software engineering experience, with the last 2 years spent in systems, infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps roles, preferably in a cloud environment.
- Experience delivering multiple collaborative projects over extended timelines.
- Hands-on use of infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
- Hands-on use of configuration management tools such as Chef or Ansible.
- Practical debugging experience with Linux-based operating systems.
- Willingness to maintain and improve code written by others.
- Solid experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud or AWS.
- Helpful additional experience with search systems such as Lucene/Solr, Elasticsearch, or Vespa.
- Helpful additional experience with Grafana, Kubernetes, or Docker.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is €118,000 to €139,000. The role also includes eligibility for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and Etsy’s competitive benefits for employees and their families.
Additional Information
Candidates may include a resume and, optionally, a cover letter. Etsy values individuality and welcomes applicants to present themselves authentically. The company is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and encourages people from all backgrounds, ages, abilities, and experiences to apply.
Etsy is an equal opportunity employer and follows affirmative action principles. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or veteran status.
If you need an accommodation during any stage of the interview process because of a disability, you should inform the recruiter. Visa sponsorship is supported by Etsy, though availability may be limited to certain roles and skill sets.
The company also notes that job duties and responsibilities may change over time at its discretion or as allowed by local law.
