Job description
Role overview
A Tier 1 main contractor within the civil engineering sector is looking for a Setting Out Engineer with 2 to 4 years of experience to support a major road infrastructure project in Cork. The scheme is a flagship national development that includes around 12 km of motorway, grade-separated junctions, bridges, underpasses, and substantial earthworks.
As the project advances across several work fronts, the successful candidate will join a busy site engineering team and contribute to the delivery of structures, earthworks, and roadworks packages across important sections of the project.
Key responsibilities
- Complete setting out activities for roadworks, drainage, and structural works such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and underpasses.
- Read and apply drawings, specifications, and digital models, including BIM data where relevant.
- Make sure construction works meet design tolerances and TII requirements.
- Support quality assurance and quality control tasks, including as-built surveys, inspection test plans, and document control.
- Work alongside senior engineers and site management on daily site coordination, subcontractor coordination, and progress monitoring.
- Use and oversee survey instruments such as total stations, GPS units, and Leica or Trimble equipment.
- Raise and follow up technical queries with design teams when needed.
- Maintain compliance with on-site health and safety procedures at all times.
Project exposure
This position provides practical exposure to a wide range of civil engineering works, including motorway construction to dual carriageway standard, grade-separated interchanges, bridge and overbridge structures, underpasses, culverts, earthworks, and retaining structures.
Requirements
- A degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Between 2 and 4 years of experience in site engineering or setting out.
- Previous involvement in civils infrastructure or road projects.
- Solid knowledge of setting out methods, survey equipment, and construction drawings.
- AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience is an advantage.
- Strong accuracy, attention to detail, and troubleshooting skills.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
What is on offer
- The chance to contribute to one of Ireland’s most significant live infrastructure projects.
- Strong guidance and career development within a Tier 1 contractor environment.
- Exposure to large civil engineering and structural work packages.
- A clear route toward progression to Site Engineer and Senior Engineer roles.
