Job description

Role overview

Join a safety-focused and inclusive team supporting drill and blast operations across several Pilbara mine sites. This permanent role is suited to someone who works well in a team, values safe working practices, and wants a roster that supports a better balance between work and home life.

The position offers a family-friendly roster of 8/6 or 8/6/7/7, helping you maintain more time for life outside work. You will be part of an environment guided by care, courage, and curiosity, with a strong emphasis on safety, productivity, and continuous improvement.

What the role involves

Working under the supervision of the blast team supervisor, you will help coordinate blasting activities in a challenging and fast-paced setting. The job focuses on safe handling of explosives, maintaining compliance, and supporting efficient blast operations across site locations.

  • Carry out housekeeping and compliance checks in magazines, magazine compounds, explosive vehicles, and work areas.
  • Promote a strong safety mindset and encourage compliance by communicating safe work practices across the operation.
  • Take part in all tasks involving explosive products, including maintaining the condition and standards of explosive compounds.
  • Work alongside the Blast Supervisor and Coordinator to plan and manage blasting activities.
  • Operate electronic detonators and firing units as required.

What you need to bring

We are looking for someone with a firm commitment to safety, a practical team-first approach, and the flexibility to support operational needs. Experience with electronic detonators is important, as is the ability to lead and coordinate a blast crew safely and effectively.

  • A valid Australian C Class manual driver’s licence or higher.
  • A current Shotfirer’s Ticket, which is mandatory.
  • A Dangerous Goods Licence.
  • Proven experience working with electronic detonators.
  • The ability to lead and coordinate a blast crew while maintaining safe and efficient operations.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to work flexibly to meet business requirements.

Benefits and rewards

This permanent position comes with a broad range of benefits designed to support your wellbeing, growth, and long-term career development.

  • Permanent employment directly with Rio Tinto.
  • A workplace where safety remains the top priority.
  • Competitive base pay aligned to your experience and skills, plus an annual incentive program.
  • Comprehensive medical coverage, including subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family.
  • Share ownership opportunities.
  • Company-provided insurance cover.
  • Salary sacrifice and salary packaging options.
  • Support for professional development and further education.
  • Access to family-friendly health and medical wellbeing support.
  • Leave options for annual leave, paid parental leave, and sick leave.
  • Employee discounts across banking, accommodation, cars, retail, and more.

Work location

You will be based in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, supporting Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations. The area is home to a large integrated asset portfolio and advanced autonomous mining technologies.
