Founded in 1744, Sotheby’s connects collectors with remarkable art and luxury items through auctions, private sales, and retail. Its expertise spans 70 selling categories and is supported by a strong technology platform and an international specialist network across 40 countries. Categories include Contemporary Art, Modern and Impressionist Art, Old Masters, Chinese Works of Art, Jewelry, Watches, Wine and Spirits, and Design, along with collectible cars and real estate through RM Sotheby’s and Concierge. Sotheby’s Financial Services is also a major art lending business, providing capital solutions for collectors worldwide and having originated more than $12 billion in loans. The company’s global headquarters is located at the Breuer building at 945 Madison Avenue in New York City.
Role Overview
The Shipping Analyst role sits within Sotheby’s global shipping network and focuses on evaluating transportation performance and creating data-led improvements in cost, service, and reliability. This position is not limited to reporting; it identifies where the network is underperforming, measures the impact of those issues, and helps track the delivery of initiatives that strengthen speed, consistency, and client experience. The role works across the US, EMEA, and APAC, partnering with Operations, Carriers, and Technology teams under the guidance of the Global Shipping Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain global carrier performance scorecards on a weekly and monthly basis for inbound and outbound transportation flows.
- Study transit times, costs, service levels, and exceptions to uncover the underlying causes of delays and performance variation.
- Break performance down by lane, carrier, region, and service type to isolate problem areas and improvement opportunities.
- Turn analysis into practical recommendations with clearly measured business impact.
- Identify and recommend high-value transportation improvement opportunities proactively.
- Assist in delivering prioritized improvement initiatives alongside the Global Shipping Manager.
- Contribute to projects such as better last-mile communication, carrier platform upgrades, and simpler processes.
- Monitor outcomes after implementation and confirm that changes produce measurable performance gains.
- Keep a centralized and organized view of global shipping initiatives.
- Track timelines, ownership, and success measures for all initiatives.
- Highlight risks early and help resolve them so projects stay on schedule.
- Work with Data and Product teams to define dashboard and reporting requirements.
- Convert operational needs into clear product and data specifications.
- Support testing and validation of new tools and enhancements.
- Help improve data capture, accuracy, and consistency across transportation workflows.
- Collaborate with Client Experience, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to address operational issues.
- Support carrier escalations using a structured, evidence-based approach.
- Contribute to wider efforts that improve the end-to-end delivery experience.
Ideal Experience and Competencies
This role calls for 1–2 years of experience in an analytical or operational position, ideally in logistics, consulting, or a similar environment. Success in the role depends on strong analytical thinking, advanced Excel skills, and the ability to work comfortably with large datasets. Experience with data visualization tools is an advantage. The right candidate should be able to simplify complex issues, organize analysis effectively, and drive toward clear conclusions. A strong sense of ownership, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate insights clearly and concisely are important, along with a genuine interest in global operations, logistics networks, and continuous improvement.
Compensation and Benefits
The expected base salary for this position is between $55,000 and $62,000. Successful candidates may also receive a discretionary bonus and a competitive benefits package. Final salary offers are influenced by relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licenses or certifications. Market and organizational considerations may also affect compensation.
Equal Opportunity Statement
Sotheby’s is an equal opportunity employer and considers applicants without discrimination based on protected characteristics under applicable federal, state, provincial, or local law. The company also complies with all relevant non-discrimination requirements in every jurisdiction where it operates.
