Job description
Job summary
This role is a full-time maintenance position supporting the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office in Yuma, Arizona. The pay range is advertised from the minimum rate up to the mid-point hourly rate, and the final offer will depend on the candidate’s education and prior experience.
Applications for this opening are handled directly for the Sheriff's Office in Yuma County. Submissions are not reviewed by Yuma County Human Resources and are instead routed to the Sheriff's Office.
What the role involves
Working with general supervision, the technician carries out moderately complex maintenance work on facilities, equipment, and related systems used by the Sheriff’s Office. The position is department-specific and supports a secure detention environment as well as other office facilities.
The work includes a broad mix of upkeep and repair activities across plumbing, mechanical, masonry, electrical, and HVAC areas, using both hand and power tools. Duties also extend to basic maintenance of detention CCTV cameras, intercom systems, and electrical security doors, along with troubleshooting building and mechanical issues, prioritizing work orders, and supporting special projects or construction assignments.
Additional responsibilities include preventive maintenance, inspecting buildings for defects, making repair recommendations, logging completed work, entering project and work-order information into a computer system, preparing written reports, maintaining tools and equipment, and keeping materials, supplies, and security-related items organized and protected. The role may also involve building or repairing office furniture, transporting supplies, and responding to rotating on-call service needs.
Because the work takes place in a secured detention setting, the employee must maintain situational awareness, follow safety procedures closely, protect confidential Sheriff’s Office information, and remain dependable in attendance. Other assigned duties may also be required.
Education and experience
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with at least three years of experience in building maintenance, repairs, construction, or a closely related field. A comparable mix of education and experience may also be considered.
Special requirements
Before appointment, the selected candidate may need to pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, and drug screening. A valid driver’s license is required and must be maintained.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
The position calls for familiarity with county and Sheriff’s Office procedures, general industry standards, preventive maintenance practices, basic detention security protocols, workplace hazard awareness, safe handling of chemicals, OSHA MSDS guidance, and strong written and verbal English skills.
Success in the role also depends on practical repair skill, basic math ability, confidence using computers and office software such as spreadsheets and word processing tools, safe operation of trade tools and measuring equipment, accurate recordkeeping, report writing, and the ability to build effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and other county departments.
The employee must be able to work inside a secure detention facility near inmates, handle adverse conditions such as confined spaces, heights, and temperature extremes, work independently, move throughout the facility, climb stairs and ladders, operate a range of tools, and lift up to 50 pounds. Repeated bending, kneeling, squatting, pushing, and pulling may be required, and the essential duties must be performable with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work environment and physical demands
Work is primarily performed in a secure detention facility and occasionally in a standard office setting. Shifts may vary, and the schedule can include irregular hours, holidays, weekends, shift work, and on-call duty. The job may also require exposure to dust, pollen, noise, extreme weather, and hazardous materials.
The role involves frequent standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crouching, twisting, bending, and stair climbing. The employee may operate a motor vehicle, travel to different locations, and use a computer, telephone, hand and power tools, equipment, and a two-way radio. Contact with inmates is indirect. Items weighing up to 50 pounds may need to be lifted occasionally.
