Job description

Role Overview

This position sits within a global professional services environment focused on energy, chemicals, and resources. The role is responsible for steering complex offshore projects to completion while meeting contract commitments, internal governance standards, and customer expectations. It involves shaping project objectives, selecting practical delivery methods, and applying a strong understanding of customer goals, contractual terms, and company policies.

The role covers planning, organizing, leading, and controlling projects in line with approved procedures and systems. It typically involves one large, highly complex assignment or several similar projects, including small and medium-sized jobs or a defined portion of a major program. The project manager also guides subordinate leaders and uses leadership influence to keep teams aligned to time, quality, scope, and budget goals.

Core Accountabilities

The incumbent will develop and oversee project plans that reflect business priorities, production needs, and organizational objectives. The role also requires building practical solutions to strategic issues and presenting recommendations to customers. In some cases, the position may act as proposal manager for small to medium projects.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Show strong commitment to health and safety and provide visible safety leadership to the project team.
  • Ensure project safety obligations are met, including Safety by Design, constructability, and maintainability requirements.
  • Take part in or lead constructability, operability, and maintainability workshops when needed.

Leadership and Team Direction

  • Define the team needed to deliver the full scope of work.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams working across multiple locations.
  • Set clear targets for scope, schedule, productivity, and budget.
  • Monitor team performance, ensure timely and quality delivery, and close any performance gaps.
  • Use communication methods and tools that keep everyone updated on progress and key performance indicators.
  • Build support for ideas by presenting options and recommendations in a persuasive way.

Technical Delivery

  • Apply the company’s methods, tools, processes, and systems throughout the project and maintain compliance with all requirements.
  • Use broad project knowledge across engineering, procurement, quality control, and related areas to drive successful execution.
  • Make sure the design team follows the customer’s Basis of Design, codes, and regulations.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and a clear understanding of engineering delivery workflow and coordination.
  • Bring experience in procurement, subcontracting, and site-based construction support.
  • Have end-to-end project experience, including time spent in the field to support implementation of engineered work.

Financial and Commercial Management

  • Apply detailed knowledge of customer contracts when overseeing project delivery.
  • Understand business drivers and financial reporting standards.
  • Track cost and schedule performance and use analysis to predict trends.
  • Review deliverables and design quantities to identify impacts on cost and progress.
  • Understand how project cost is built up, including gross margin, margin erosion risks, and margin improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure change control is properly understood and used by the project team.
  • Manage cash flow needs, including receivables and work in progress, to reduce days sales outstanding.

Execution Planning and Performance Control

  • Develop and review Project Execution Plans that cover the full scope of work.
  • Use lessons learned to improve execution planning.
  • Run execution coordination, periodic reviews, and controls that track project progress.
  • Understand project control reports, spot problem areas, and put recovery plans in place.
  • Interpret schedule and resource plan elements effectively.
  • Build value creation and sustainable solution goals into the plan and measure delivery against those goals.
  • Support successful workshare execution.

Communication and Stakeholder Management

  • Lead the preparation and presentation of proposals and reports to staff and management.
  • Set up clear communication processes and tools for the project team.
  • Communicate requirements, contractual duties, customer expectations, KPIs, and project status clearly.
  • Create a trusted and open team environment.
  • Handle issues and conflicts within the team, including customer-related matters.
  • Work effectively across different levels, functions, regions, and cultures.
  • Collaborate across the organization to achieve common goals.

Customer, Risk, and Opportunity Management

  • Understand the customer’s main drivers and KPIs.
  • Manage customer representatives and other important stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong customer and stakeholder relationships through clear expectations and communication.
  • Discuss progress, challenges, and issues transparently and professionally.
  • Recognize commercial and legal contract risks and prepare mitigation actions.
  • Identify emerging risks and create contingency, resolution, and mitigation plans as the project evolves.
  • Follow established risk management procedures and maintain a current risk register, updated and communicated at least monthly.
  • Use the risk register to support contingency budgeting.

Education, Registration, and Experience

A university engineering degree is required. Professional registration in the local jurisdiction is also needed, along with a recognized project management certification such as IPMA, APM, PMI, or AIPM.

Offshore project experience is mandatory. The role calls for extensive experience delivering large, complex offshore projects in leading engineering organizations, along with the ability to lead multiple cross-functional teams in international settings. Strong technical knowledge of offshore wellhead platforms is essential.

Experience should include medium and large projects with medium and high-risk elements, including EPCM and EPC DD work, site assignments, and multicultural or multinational environments. The role also requires sound judgment, the ability to make independent decisions and recommendations, and a broad understanding of project-related functions and change leadership.

Advanced use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint is expected, along with the ability to organize information from multiple sources and follow prescribed formats and policies.
