Job description

Role overview

The Senior HR Generalist is a hands-on, execution-focused position within the HRBP function, working across people programs, employee relations, and cross-functional talent enablement. This role is based in Washington, DC and supports a fast-growing technology company headquartered in Reston, VA. The organization currently has about 130 employees and is expected to grow to around 200 by the end of 2026. As headcount expands across multiple teams, this role will help new hires become productive faster, keep people programs running smoothly, and equip managers to handle employee relations issues confidently.

The position also offers a potential progression path into a Senior People & Culture Consultant or HRBP role, depending on individual strengths, interests, and business priorities.

People & Culture initiatives

  • Lead coordination for the OKR launch process in Lattice, including the timeline, manager and individual contributor communications, and adoption tracking.
  • Run the semi-annual performance management cycle from start to finish, managing schedules, stakeholder messaging, completion monitoring, and escalations.
  • Oversee the company-wide career ladder and job description project with the Director, HRBP and other stakeholders by maintaining plans, arranging sessions, controlling document versions, tracking open tasks, and keeping delivery on schedule.
  • Work with functional leaders so every employee has a current job description with accurate titles while career ladders are finalized.
  • Keep a live tracker and dashboard for all active people and culture projects, identify risks early, and prepare brief status updates for the Director, HRBP.
  • Analyze themes from performance and engagement data in Lattice and share recurring insights with People & Culture leadership.

Talent enablement

  • Act as the connector between Employee Experience and business leaders to identify onboarding gaps and coordinate customized solutions that shorten ramp-up time for new hires.
  • Partner with leaders to capture team-specific onboarding needs by helping them create content themselves, ensuring onboarding goes beyond standard orientation.
  • Define, monitor, and report onboarding metrics such as time-to-productivity, while also supporting the buddy program and early OKR setup during the first 30 days.
  • Coach managers and individual contributors on using Lattice consistently for 1:1 tracking, documentation, and feedback so future performance conversations are better supported.
  • Coordinate the new manager learning-and-development program by curating relevant development paths from existing vendors, managing logistics, and ensuring newly promoted managers are enrolled promptly in coordination with HR Ops.
  • Support communication norms, team dynamics, and cultural onboarding as the company expands internationally, especially for managers leading cross-cultural teams.

Employee relations

  • Support front-line managers with difficult employee conversations and end-to-end performance improvement plans, including drafting, documentation, follow-up, and results tracking.
  • Assist with or lead investigations using established procedures, working alongside the Director, HRBP as needed.
  • Serve as the main contact for FMLA and ADA interactive process questions, handling eligibility review, leave coordination, return-to-work steps, documentation, tracking, and payroll communication.
  • Help manage the full termination process, including documentation and checklist completion, and act as the contact for separated employees during offboarding while partnering with the Director, HRBP on severance preparation, review, and execution.
  • Conduct exit interviews for voluntary departures among front-line managers and individual contributors, then summarize themes for People & Culture leadership.
  • Support mandatory learning and development tools by monitoring completion, maintaining renewal calendars, and escalating gaps to leadership when needed.

Required qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent background in a relevant field.
  • Strong organization and close attention to detail, with the ability to juggle several sensitive, deadline-driven workstreams without missing steps.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear messages for managers and individual contributors through email and Slack.
  • Good judgment and discretion when dealing with confidential matters.
  • Experience using AI tools effectively to improve productivity.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience within the last 7 years, showing progression in employee relations ownership, including FMLA/ADA administration and performance improvement plans, plus change management or HR program coordination/project management in areas such as onboarding, training, or compliance.
  • Experience supporting termination processes, including work connected to severance documentation.
  • Working knowledge of FMLA, ADA, Title VII, and FLSA.
  • Comfort working with data, including tracker creation, HRIS reporting, and presenting metrics to leadership.
  • Familiarity with performance management platforms such as Lattice, CultureAmp, or similar tools.

Preferred background

  • Previous HR experience in a technology company or another fast-paced growth environment.
  • Exposure to project management systems such as Asana, Monday.com, Notion, or similar tools.
  • Experience with job architecture, leveling structures, or compensation tools such as Pave.
  • Professional HR certification such as PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP.
  • International HR or employee relations experience, especially in the UK.
