Job description
Role overview
Pynenburg & Collins Architects is seeking a Senior Architectural Technician who takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality documentation and enjoys contributing to projects with real technical complexity and public value. The role suits someone who is confident overseeing drawing packages, comfortable guiding junior team members, and skilled at turning ambitious design ideas into practical, buildable details.
The practice works across science, research, education, remote locations, and other technically demanding facilities, where careful documentation has a direct impact on the final outcome.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and oversee detailed technical drawings, specifications, and construction details to a consistently high standard.
- Coordinate technical inputs across consultant drawings and spot clashes early in the process.
- Make sure all documentation aligns with the New Zealand Building Code, applicable standards, and consent requirements.
- Work alongside architects to convert design intent into clear, well-resolved details that can be built effectively.
- Take responsibility for documentation delivery on full or partial projects, including reviewing and checking work produced by others.
- Support and mentor junior technical staff in documentation practices and digital workflows.
- Carry out site observations and report findings clearly to the wider project team.
- Liaise with contractors, consultants, and other external parties to help keep projects progressing smoothly.
What the employer is looking for
The ideal candidate will bring senior-level experience as an Architectural Technician, along with strong capability across multiple stages of project documentation. A sound working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and consent procedures is essential, as is confidence using Revit and related industry-standard tools.
This position is suited to someone who can lead documentation work, review quality, and support others, rather than simply produce drawings. The team is also looking for someone who communicates clearly, works well with both internal colleagues and external stakeholders, and approaches technical issues in a practical, solution-focused way.
Why this role may appeal
This is an opportunity to contribute to a practice that values technical excellence, strong working relationships, and meaningful outcomes. You will have a real say in the standard of work leaving the studio and the chance to help strengthen the technical capability of the wider team. The practice values people who care deeply about their work, support those around them, and want to be part of an ambitious environment.
About the practice
Pynenburg & Collins Architects creates spaces that improve the way people live, work, and connect. Their approach balances function, form, and atmosphere, and over more than 30 years they have completed a wide range of projects throughout New Zealand, from the Bay of Islands to Antarctica. Their portfolio includes DOC huts, rest homes, scientific facilities, churches, and private homes.
Application process
The hiring approach is designed to be human-focused. Instead of a cover letter, applicants are asked to submit a CV and complete a 15–20 minute AI-guided experience that explores strengths, working style, and how they may complement the existing team. There are no right or wrong answers.
Applications must be submitted through the specified process only; submissions made elsewhere will not be considered. Applications are reviewed as they are received, so applying early is recommended.
Additional information
The role is based in Wellington, New Zealand. The position is full-time and remote. No salary, opening count, start date, duration, or application deadline was provided in the source.
