Job description

About the Organisation

Te Tai Ōhanga | The Treasury is focused on stewardship for Aotearoa New Zealand, helping to improve outcomes for people now and in the future. It protects the country's financial position and serves as the Government's trusted economic adviser, with the aim of raising living standards for all New Zealanders.

About the Division

The Commercial Performance Division oversees the government's commercial entities, mixed-ownership entities, and Crown Financial Institutions. The team provides specialist advice on governance and the policy settings that support these assets, with a focus on improving both financial and non-financial performance. It also supports major commercial transactions for the government, works to align entities with wider public objectives, and leads the Export Credit office.

About the Role

This role offers a chance to contribute to an important and evolving work programme within the Commercial Performance Division. The position covers both policy and operational advice, and the exact focus of work will depend on the selected candidate's background and strengths. Areas of work may include strengthening the commercial entity monitoring system, supporting stewardship and updates to legislative and regulatory frameworks, and contributing to system improvements.

What You Will Do

  • Provide advice across policy and operational matters within the commercial performance portfolio.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the operating model used for monitoring commercial entities.
  • Support work related to legislative and regulatory stewardship.
  • Assist with enhancements to systems and processes that underpin the team’s work.
  • Work collaboratively with expert colleagues to deliver outcomes that make a positive difference.

About You

The Treasury is looking for someone with a broad background in the public sector or policy environment. Experience in economic, commercial, financial, or regulatory policy would be useful, though it is not mandatory. You should be confident handling complex and important policy issues, and able to use communication, leadership, relationship-building, and analytical strengths to move difficult problems forward.

What We Offer

  • A supportive, high-performing team with opportunities to grow across the organisation.
  • A workplace that values excellence and encourages people to develop their abilities and potential.
  • A strong commitment to diversity, inclusion, and the value of lived experience.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including the option to work from home, to support work-life balance.
  • A range of health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Five weeks of annual leave for permanent full-time staff, pro-rated for part-time staff.
  • A competitive salary package.
  • Work that is varied, engaging, and connected to improving living standards for New Zealanders.
  • Development and training opportunities to support career growth and aspirations.
