Job description

Role overview

CGS Federal is hiring a Senior Accounting Technician to support a major federal agency. This full-time mid-level role sits within the Finance department and covers a broad mix of accounting and financial operations, including accounts payable, reimbursement activity, collections, and account oversight.

What you will do

  • Process payroll and labor-related transactions through reorganization actions.
  • Review and handle federal travel transactions in line with applicable rules and policies.
  • Check, interpret, and keep financial information current for the DOJ Office of the Comptroller.
  • Work with electronic tools and systems such as UFMS, JEDI, JEDI-2, SAFARI, E-2, and SAMS.gov to evaluate complex data.
  • Use financial software, databases, and online sources to capture and retrieve financial records, especially for reimbursable and billing activities.
  • Track spending across multiple accounts using a financial management system.
  • Prepare reconciliation reports and complete weekly reconciliation of books and reports.
  • Draft financial reports and supporting documents for review and approval by DOJ Office of the Comptroller management and other U.S. government agencies.
  • Support other DOJ sections with UFMS transaction processing and help resolve system issues.
  • Write memorandums and correspondence for vendors and agencies using financial reports and activity details as reference material.
  • Create and distribute correspondence, prepare forms and financial paperwork, maintain records and office files, route documents, schedule meetings and web conferences, and assist with room and office event setup.
  • Take on other assigned duties or self-initiated work needed for regular operations or special projects.
  • Contribute to team objectives whenever needed.

Qualifications

  • Two-year degree in accounting, or a four-year degree in a related field such as finance, business, banking, or economics with at least 30 credit hours in accounting.
  • Understanding of both manual and automated accounting systems used in banking, financial, and similar organizations.
  • Experience with commitments, obligations, and interagency reimbursement agreements.
  • Background in quarterly review, accrual, and closeout processes.
  • Ability to analyze financial activities and provide technical support for different financial functions.
  • Capability to identify and assess changes in budgetary or financial activity.
  • Ability to research and interpret financial data.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Preferred experience and strengths

  • Proficiency with UFMS, JEDI, SAFARI, E-2, and Excel.
  • Experience managing budgeting cycles and overall financial administration.
  • Exposure to accounts payable and accounts receivable processing.
  • Experience analyzing and managing reimbursable agreements.
  • Knowledge of obligations processing and tracking committed funds.
  • Exposure to auditing, accounting services, and cash flow analysis.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis and research related to financial fraud.
  • Experience with electronic data acquisition and processing.
  • Understanding of systems analysis, systems administration, and database user support.
  • Comfort with reporting, records management, business compliance, and special projects.
  • Strong analytical thinking, critical thinking, time management, and organization.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including formatting, sorting, data correction, table manipulation, table arrays, SUM, MAX, MIN, VLOOKUP, TRIM, pivot tables, and arithmetic formulas.
