Job description

Overview

Buffalo Rock Company, a long-established beverage bottler founded in Birmingham, Alabama more than 123 years ago, is hiring a Sanitation Technician for its Central Hub - Vertique team. This role supports the cleanliness, hygiene, and operational readiness of equipment and facility areas at the Central Hub Distribution Center. The position reports to the Inventory Supervisor - Central Hub and is classified as a regular, non-exempt role with no travel required.

Schedule and work setting

The work schedule runs Sunday through Thursday, and flexibility is required. The role demands full attendance and may include nights, weekends, and holidays whenever operations require it. The work environment includes both indoor warehouse areas and outdoor spaces, with temperatures ranging from extreme heat to extreme cold. Physical presence at the Central Hub is required.

Core duties

The Sanitation Technician is expected to follow the Master Cleaning Schedule and perform detailed cleaning tasks across the Vertique system and surrounding facility areas. The position helps ensure that the site remains clean, safe, and ready for daily operations.

  • Maintain housekeeping and GMP-compliant conditions in all assigned inside and outside areas.
  • Keep the Vertique system, dock doors, and surrounding work zones free from debris.
  • Carry out the daily warehouse Master Cleaning Schedule assigned by the Sanitation Lead, including cleaning palletizers, merge diverters, towers, wrappers, pallet chain, saw lanes, hand stacks, dog houses, and dock doors, then notify the Sanitation Lead for inspection once finished.
  • Confirm that all product is cleared from an area before using water hoses for cleaning.
  • Use and care for cleaning tools and equipment, and report any issues or breakdowns promptly.
  • Operate power washers and scrubbers to clean designated areas.
  • Sweep, mop, and wash assigned spaces on a timely basis.
  • Bale cardboard and plastic waste using compactors.
  • Empty, sort, collect, and dispose of waste correctly, including periodic washing of trash cans, blue recycling bins, and roll dumpsters.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely according to manufacturer guidance and site safety rules, including proper storage and labeling.
  • Know the location of Emergency Motor Overrides (EMOs) and be able to use and reset them when needed.
  • Follow safe lifting practices, BRC safety expectations, SOPs, work instructions, and approved cleaning product requirements.
  • Work cooperatively with sanitation and operations teammates, communicate clearly, and make sound decisions while multitasking without constant supervision.
  • Comply with Good Manufacturing Program requirements under CFR 21 Section 110 and take part in food-safety training, while reporting any possible food safety concerns.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities and company expectations

  • Demonstrate ethical and professional conduct at work and while representing the company off-site during or after working hours.
  • Participate in continuous self-development through company-provided training, including web-based, classroom, and facilitated learning.
  • Take reasonable precautions to protect the company from damage, theft, and other liabilities.
  • Help protect the safety of employee-partners, self, customers, company property, and customer property.
  • Honor business commitments and support the company purpose of building brands through legendary service and remarkable people.
  • Live the organization’s core values: serving communities, driving customer success, valuing integrity, pursuing continuous improvement, caring for one another, and winning the day.

Working conditions and physical demands

This is a physically demanding warehouse role that requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and working around machinery and conveyors. The job may require moving and stacking pallets up to 65 pounds during the shift. The employee must be able to distinguish red, green, and off lights, hear throughout the workday, and wear PPE such as a high-visibility shirt or safety vest, slip-resistant shoes, a mask, and eye protection. Tasks may require bending under equipment to clean, sweep, and mop.

Experience and education

A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with additional training in sanitation, food safety, or a related field. Prior experience of six months in sanitation, janitorial work, or a similar role in a warehouse or distribution center is preferred. The candidate should be able to learn to operate a tenant scrubber, communicate effectively, stay organized, pay close attention to detail, and work independently in a fast-paced setting.
