Role overview
The Sanitation Supervisor is responsible for making sure sanitation practices, procedures, and execution meet the company’s food quality, food safety, and legal standards. This role ensures that sanitation teams follow GMP and HACCP requirements and work in a safe, compliant, and efficient manner. The supervisor works closely with Plant Production and Quality Control teams, trains and leads sanitation staff, and responds quickly to management needs related to microbial testing and pre-operational inspection results.
Key duties
- Lead, train, and support sanitation crews while organizing manpower, planning work, handling absenteeism, and managing conflict when needed.
- Provide coaching and day-to-day guidance that helps employees grow and perform effectively in line with departmental needs.
- Monitor, maintain, and arrange the chemical and supply inventory required to keep sanitation operations running properly.
- Take part in customer and CFIA audits and carry out corrective actions to keep quality assurance and food safety requirements on track.
- Oversee sanitation processes and team activity so that quality, efficiency, and safety targets are achieved or exceeded, including maintaining CFIA ratings and regulatory sanitation standards for equipment and the plant.
- Promote continuous improvement across all operational areas.
- Coordinate with other departments on sanitation issues and maintain productive working relationships inside and outside the organization.
- Hold weekly sanitation team meetings and provide updates to the Plant Manager.
- Complete daily inspections and documentation to ensure alignment with company policy, HACCP, and CFIA requirements.
- Participate in training related to food safety, HACCP, product quality, and equipment/process technology.
- Support Joint Health and Safety Committee initiatives and follow all health and safety policies.
- Contribute to the development, upkeep, and ongoing improvement of quality systems.
- Help with production setup after pre-operation checks are completed.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership, team-building, and interpersonal ability.
- Comfort building strong working relationships with employees, peers, and managers.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills with the ability to lead, motivate, coach, mentor, and resolve workplace conflict.
- Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Excellent attendance history and willingness to work weekends and overtime when required.
- Experience with HACCP, food safety, and WHMIS.
- At least 3 years of related and/or supervisory experience.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Diploma or post-secondary education is preferred, with a technical certificate considered an asset.
- Intermediate computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, charting, and graphing.
- Experience in meat processing is an asset, particularly in sanitation.
- A proactive, positive, and “can do” attitude.
- Flexibility and adaptability to take on additional responsibilities and cross-train.
- Ability to assess tasks and prioritize effectively.
Compensation and other information
The expected salary range for this position is $72,000 to $78,000 per year. The final compensation offer will depend on the candidate’s location, relevant experience, and skill set.
