About the Role

Join the Department of Conservation as a Research Technician focusing on the critically endangered Pukunui, or Southern New Zealand Dotterel, on Rakiura Stewart Island. This predominantly field-centered role involves crucial conservation work during the upcoming breeding season, running full-time from 21 September 2026 to 15 January 2027.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed field surveys across diverse terrain
  • Monitor bird populations and their nesting sites
  • Install and manage nest camera equipment
  • Collect, organize, and input research data
  • Analyze findings and prepare comprehensive reports
  • Coordinate and lead field trips for the research team

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven ability in backcountry navigation, including off-track travel
  • Experience working autonomously in remote, exposed environments
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping techniques
  • Strong report writing and data analysis capabilities
  • Leadership experience, including managing projects or teams
  • Bird monitoring knowledge and practical experience
  • Competency in data collection and database management
  • High physical fitness with capability to carry heavy equipment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a relaxed, adaptable manner

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary educational background
  • Experience with bird handling and banding procedures

Additional Information

This fixed-term appointment is based primarily on Rakiura Stewart Island while on duty, including overnight stays in small huts and exposed sub-alpine campsites. The work schedule follows a 10-day on, 4-day off roster. During off-duty periods, employees may reside anywhere at their own travel cost to and from the island. The Department of Conservation will provide ferry transport between Invercargill and Rakiura Stewart Island for work shifts.

Salary and Eligibility

Compensation ranges from $65,590 to $76,589 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications. Applicants must hold a current New Zealand work visa valid for the full employment duration.
