Job description

About the role

This is a fixed-term full-time ranger position focused on weed management in the islands of Tikapa Moana / the Hauraki Gulf. The role sits within a roaming field team that lives and works across multiple islands, including four months on Rangitoto-Motutapu, four months on Te Hauturu-o-Toi, and shorter assignments on Tiritiri Matangi, Motuihe, Motuora, Kawau, and smaller unmanned islands near Motuora such as Te Haupa and Moturekareka.

The work roster may follow either a 10-days-on/4-days-off pattern or a five-day week, depending on island programmes. Accommodation is supplied for the full shift period, and the ranger is expected to stay on the island while rostered on duty and travel off-island during scheduled days off, except for Hauturu because of its remote location.

What you will do

  • Carry out grid searches in priority weed-control areas across island locations.
  • Support weed suppression work using manual methods as well as agrichemical-based approaches.
  • Record waypoints and track logs accurately with GPS equipment.

Skills and experience

  • Hands-on experience with weed and pest control methods.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office, GIS software, GPS tools, and field communication devices.
  • Comfortable living in shared accommodation on remote islands for extended periods.
  • Backcountry experience and the physical fitness needed for demanding, rugged terrain.
  • Strong attention to health and safety, with the ability to model safe work practices.
  • Good communication and people skills.
  • Ability to work alongside and build effective relationships with iwi, community groups, and landowners.
  • Valid New Zealand driver licence.
  • Desirable: Growsafe, 4WD and Light Utility Vehicle qualifications.
  • Desirable: current first aid certificate.
