Role overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is looking for a Railroad Flagger in Cape Coral, FL. This full-time, field-based position supports safe rail operations by managing train movements and applying federal railroad safety standards. The work may involve supporting Class 1 railroads, regional and short-line railroads, transit systems, state rail projects, and contractors. The role reports to the District Manager and includes significant travel, averaging about 50% to 85% of the time.
Compensation
Pay ranges from $25 to $37 per hour, depending on experience.
Experience and background
Applicants should bring at least 2 years of experience in a railroad-related environment, such as a Class 1 railroad, regional short line, transit system, State DOT Rail Division, railroad supplier, railroad contractor, or railroad consultant. Experience in the Maintenance of Way (MOW) department is preferred.
Core duties
- Coordinate on-site work activities and help keep operations running safely.
- Stay in contact with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors.
- Conduct safety briefings before work starts.
- Apply and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety rules.
- Confirm that contractors complete all required training.
- Identify and respond to any safety or rule violations.
- Prepare daily reports on job-site activity.
- Maintain on-track protection in line with federal requirements.
Skills and work expectations
The position calls for strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly in both spoken and written English. Candidates should be comfortable using basic digital tools such as Citrix, email, phone, texting apps, Android tablets, and smartphones. A solid understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety is important, along with the ability to develop and maintain client relationships. The role also requires willingness to travel for extended periods, including months at a time, and to complete all required federal, client, and company training.
Work environment and physical demands
This is a field-based role that may require long-distance driving or travel. The work involves standing for long periods, walking on uneven ground, and performing duties in extreme heat or cold, as well as dusty and noisy environments. Candidates must have good near, far, color, and peripheral vision, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
