Job description

About the company

Hook is a social music platform supported by leading investors, focused on reinventing music discovery, fan participation, and creator growth. The product transforms tracks people already love into interactive sounds that can be remixed and played with, giving fans and creators a simple way to reinterpret music without a learning curve. By working directly with artists, labels, and rights holders, Hook aims to make music discovery, sharing, and expression feel both respectful and rewarding. The platform is designed around the idea that music should be experienced, personalized, and actively created with—not just passively consumed.

Role overview

Hook is hiring a Product Designer to take ownership of the Studio experience while also contributing to the wider product when needed. This is the company’s most complex and distinctive area, where creators build content using licensed music, video clips, and AI-assisted tools. The role involves designing a smooth creation journey that stays approachable for casual users while still offering enough depth for advanced creators. You will also help shape partner-focused tools and experiences for producers, labels, and artists.

The position spans both mobile and web, with responsibility for creating a consistent experience across creation, consumption, and management flows. In addition to the core Studio work, you may also support adjacent product areas such as growth, monetization, and the main product experience. This role is remote or hybrid for applicants in the New York metro area.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead design for the Creator and Studio platform across mobile and web experiences.
  • Create complete creation journeys, from initial onboarding through advanced editing and publishing.
  • Design for both ease of use and creative depth so the product works well for casual and advanced users alike.
  • Turn product objectives and user insights into clear, polished design solutions.
  • Test different concepts, build prototypes quickly, and refine ideas using feedback and data.
  • Work closely with Product and Engineering to develop solutions and deliver strong execution.
  • Focus on interaction design and visual craft to improve the overall product experience.
  • Help maintain consistency across the product and contribute to a shared design system.
  • Support related areas such as cross-platform journeys and partner-facing tools for labels and artists.

Requirements

  • 4–7 years of experience in product design, ideally in consumer or prosumer products, with exposure to complex workflows or creative tools such as video, audio, design, or AI products.
  • Strong product judgment and the ability to define the right problems and carry solutions through from start to finish.
  • Experience designing sophisticated workflows or tools, including editors, creative applications, marketplaces, or multi-step processes.
  • Excellent interaction design skills and strong attention to detail, especially for dense or frequently used flows.
  • Experience designing for both mobile and web, with the ability to tailor the experience to each platform.
  • Comfort exploring several directions before narrowing to a strong final solution.
  • Ability to prototype quickly in order to communicate ideas and test concepts.
  • Strong systems thinking with an emphasis on consistency and cohesion across the product.
  • Experience working closely with Product and Engineering in a fast-moving, iterative environment.
  • Ability to extend brand language within product experiences in a way that feels natural and scalable.
  • Comfort using AI tools to support ideation, iteration, and the design process.

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior experience in startup environments.
  • Background in contributing to or creating design systems.
  • Interest in music, content creation, or broader creative ecosystems.

Why this role matters

This position will define how creation works at Hook, which sits at the center of the product. You will shape the way creators turn ideas into content, balancing simplicity with expressive power across mobile and web. Your work will influence what gets made, how it moves through the platform, and how the ecosystem grows. As an early designer at the company, your impact will go beyond individual features and help establish the quality bar, craft standard, and design culture as Hook scales.
