Job description
About the Company
Alumni Ventures is a large and highly active venture capital platform with more than $1.4B in assets raised and investments across 1,600+ companies. Its community includes 850,000+ members and a team of 40+ dedicated investors, helping accredited individuals access venture opportunities that are usually available only to institutions. The firm operates through alumni-led communities and a diversified co-investment model, with offices in Boston, New York, Chicago, Menlo Park, Manchester, NH, London, and Tokyo. The company is expanding quickly and focuses on supporting entrepreneurs while building the next generation of venture capital talent.
The organization follows a 5-day in-office working model because it values collaboration, mentorship, and shared pace.
About the Role
This Principal position is an expression of interest for experienced venture professionals who want to work with high-potential companies and founders. The role sits at the center of sourcing, evaluating, and completing investments for one of the firm’s investment teams, while also contributing to broader platform initiatives.
This is not tied to a single immediate opening. Instead, applications are reviewed continuously for future Principal-level opportunities across New York City, Boston, Manchester, Chicago, and Menlo Park. Relevant candidates may be contacted when matching opportunities arise.
The position is a broad investing role that spans multiple sectors and company stages. It focuses mainly on Seed and Series A, with some involvement in Pre-Seed and Growth-stage opportunities. The role contributes to building a portfolio of about 25 investments per year, identifying follow-on opportunities, supporting fund performance, and strengthening the firm’s standing in the venture ecosystem.
You will partner closely with the Managing Partner, Senior Associates, and the wider team to identify promising businesses, lead diligence and negotiation efforts, and build durable relationships with founders, co-investors, and industry contacts. Strong network-building, sound judgment, curiosity, creativity, warmth, and decisiveness are central to success.
What You Will Do
- Source strong investment opportunities that fit the team’s thesis and broader firm priorities.
- Improve the rate at which sourced leads move into qualified investment candidates.
- Run early-stage due diligence by speaking with founders, customers, and market participants, and by using relevant data.
- Assess market direction, competitive dynamics, and emerging themes to improve investment decisions.
- Help move approved deals from term sheet through closing.
- Stay aligned with the firm’s strategy to help maintain a balanced and high-performing portfolio.
- Build and use a strong network of founders, venture investors, and domain experts to access high-quality deal flow.
- Increase the firm’s visibility and influence across the venture community through relationship-building.
- Support fundraising, investor relations, and community engagement through events, webinars, and thought leadership.
- Help portfolio companies grow and create long-term value.
- Track portfolio performance through CEO check-ins, performance reviews, and strategic support.
Who You Are
You bring at least 7 years of professional experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting, or a high-growth startup environment.
A bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field is required, while an MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
You are comfortable using modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar platforms to improve research, analysis, communication, and productivity.
What to Expect
Because this is an expression-of-interest posting, applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. If your background is a fit for a current or upcoming Principal opportunity, the team will reach out with more details.
Culture and Working Style
- Put the team and stakeholders first by focusing on value for investors, founders, and colleagues.
- Take ownership, act quickly, and follow through on commitments.
- Challenge ideas thoughtfully, use data and judgment, and execute as one team once aligned.
- Prioritize the most important work and keep efforts focused where the firm has the greatest advantage.
- Use AI and emerging technology proactively to improve decisions and productivity.
- Stay inquisitive, think ambitiously, and keep learning for long-term impact.
Benefits and Perks
The company offers a flexible benefits package intended to support health, finances, and life outside work. Benefits start soon after joining and include choices that can be tailored to individual needs.
- Medical coverage with several plan options, including employer-funded deductible support and HSA contributions
- Dental and vision coverage with multiple tier choices
- Tax-advantaged accounts such as HSA, FSA, and commuter benefits, plus a monthly employer contribution
- 401(k) plan with company match and immediate vesting
- Company-paid life and disability insurance, with optional supplemental coverage available
- Access to EAP, health advocacy, and wellness support programs
- Unlimited PTO and generous paid parental leave
- 11 company holidays
Compensation
The base salary starts at $175,000 and is supplemented by equity, carry potential, and a corporate bonus.
